Ann Anderson Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Aug. 20, 2008.
ANDERSON, Ann Watson, 71, of Gordonsville, Va., passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2008. Born as Ann Popovich in Loudoun County, Va., on October 11, 1936. After marriage and the birth of her only child, Ann began a career with Fairfax Public Schools, working in the county's only special education school in the early 1960s. She would later move to Fairfax County Government, where she worked in the Department of Environmental Management before retiring as a manager in Building and Design Review after 30 years of service. Several years before her retirement, she married a second time to Captain Vernon F. Anderson, United States Navy Retired. They shared a love of friends, travel and sailing, while building their retirement home in Gordonsville, Va. Completed in 1991, they enjoyed the small town life until the Captain's passing in 2005 from Alzheimer's disease. Ann turned this experience outward, joining the Alzheimer's Chapter in Charlottesville to promote awareness and leading support groups in the region. She participated in a number of faith-based and community partnerships, providing meals and home assistance to those less fortunate, and a variety of organizations related to children. After a brief illness, Ann passed peacefully at home surrounded by her family. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Renata K. and James L. Wade; her sisters and spouses, Elizabeth and Charles Roach, Mary and Charles Saunders; and her brother and spouse, Donald and Cathy Popovich. A visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville. Memorial service will be conducted at Gordonsville Baptist Church 11 a.m. Thursday, August 21, 2008, 303 West Gordon Ave. Burial will be held at National Memorial in Falls Church, Va., the following day. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Feed My Sheep, Gordonsville Baptist, 303 West Gordon Ave., Gordonsville, Va. 22942, and the Alzheimer's Association Central and Western Virginia Chapter, P.O. Box 4634, Charlottesville, Va. 22905.

Renata, I am so sorry for your loss of your Mom. I worked with Ann for a number of years in DEM and she was a great person and taught me lots in preparation for her leaving and making it possible for me to move into her position. Her presence will be missed by many for all of the good works she has done.

Our thoughts and prayes are with you at this time.
Ann was a true and loyal friend. Her quiet generosity and care for those around her is a shining example of Christ's commandment, "love one another". She will be missed by many.

Though I never truly knew her and have never met anyone in her family, Ann Anderson blessed me and missions work in Romania many times. Thank-you.
