Joel C. McGurk

McGURK, Joel C., of Richmond, passed away August 25, 2008. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on August 18, 1934. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Gloria M. McGurk; a sister, Jan May; nephew, Jason May, both of Winterpark, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Kate and Betty Moore; brother-in-law, David Moore; and many nieces and nephews. In 1950, he moved with his family to Deltaville, Va., and graduated from Christ Church School. He graduated from the University of Richmond, attended law school at U.Va., and received a master's degree from VCU. After he graduated from college, he proudly served as an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve and retired with the rank of Commander. He spent many years in higher education as a teacher and administrator at VCU, Richard Bland College, The College of William and Mary, and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. He will be remembered for his lifelong interest in antique cars. The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Woody Funeral Home, Parham Chapel, 1771 N. Parham Rd. A graveside service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In memory of Joel's love and compassion for all God's creatures, the family requests donations be made to the Richmond SPCA, 2519 Hermitage Rd., Richmond, Va. 23220.
