Adelaide Montague Obituary

MONTAGUE, Adelaide Walton, widow of Dr. J. Warren Montague, died Monday, September 1, 2008, at Cedarfield in Richmond, Va. Born in 1915, she was raised in Morganton, N.C., the second child of Hal Murphy Walton and Adelaide Thomason Walton. She attended Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va., and later attended both George Washington University and Strayer Business College in Washington, D.C., earning a good civil service rating. She worked for the Federal Government in D.C., transferring to Richmond in 1938. In 1941, she married Dr. John Warren Montague and lived in Richmond until her death. In addition to being a devoted mother to her four children, she also enjoyed fishing with her husband and spending family time at the Potomac River and Virginia Beach. She also enjoyed writing short stories, playing Bridge, creating and sewing clothing, and investing in stocks. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Tuckahoe Woman's Club, and the Country Club of Virginia. Adelaide is survived by four devoted children, John Warren Montague Jr. and his wife Jean, Gay Montague Jewett and her husband Bryce, all of Richmond, Dr. David Lee Montague and his wife Neblett, of Callao, Va., and Mary Warren Montague Pinnell, of Virginia Beach; seven grandchildren, J. Warren Montague III and his wife Gale, Kevin R. Montague and his wife Ren‚e, Jennifer Jewett Ruth and her husband Scott, Bryce D. Jewett III and his wife Erin, D. Preston Montague, Whitney Gay Montague Mathews and her husband Andy, all of Richmond, and C. Wellford Pinnell IV, of South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; and eight great-grandchildren, Mariah Montague, Jack and George Montague, Anne Mason, Scotty and Bayler Ruth, Maddie Jewett, and Beauford Mathews. She is also survived by a sister, Henrietta Rice McKenzie and her husband Bill, of High Point, N.C.; and a brother, Thomas W. Walton, of Morganton, N.C. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Friday, September 5, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Road, Richmond, Va. 23226. The family is grateful for her 93 years on this earth and would like to give special thanks to the wonderful nurses and staff at Cedarfield (3rd and 4th floors) for their loving and caring attention to her during the past 10 years.
