SHORTER, Jean Conley "Beans," age 88, of Crewe, passed away Friday, September 26, 2008. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Elizabeth Ashmore Shorter. He is survived by a son, Charles Edward Shorter and wife, Ruth, of Richmond; two daughters, Mina Ison and husband, Leo, of Nottoway, and Nan Vick and husband, R.C., of Crewe; three grandchildren, Robin, Jason and R.C.; five great-grandchildren, Cory, Taryn, Mandy, Kendall and Sarah; and one sister, Betty Lee Jones of Richmond. Mr. Shorter was a Navy veteran of WWII and the Korean War, as well as a longtime member of Crewe Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years. He was a retired employee of N & W Railroad. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, September 29, 2008, at Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home Chapel, Crewe, Va. The visitation will be held at Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 11 a.m. until time of services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions are made in his memory to Crewe Volunteer Fire Department, 1105 West Virginia Avenue, Crewe, Va. 23930.

If the world had more Beans in the world, the world would be in much, much better shape now. It's hard to put into words how fine you are and what you meant to me. Like many others I will have tons of good memories. This is said in spite of you being a Dallas Cowboy fan and a cantankerous dyed-in-the-wool Tip O'Neill Democrat. You are missed.
