John Moffitt Obituary

MOFFITT, John Harold, 88, of Richmond, widower of Lucille Davis Moffitt and husband of Mary Ankeney Moffitt, died Saturday, October 4, 2008, after a lengthy stay at McGuire V.A. Medical Center's Nursing Home. A native of Old Fort, N.C., he was the only son of John and Lola Fleming Moffitt, with sisters, Sarah Ellen Proctor and Sue Chrisawn, all deceased. Mr. Moffitt, a graduate of NC State, was a professional estimating engineer. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Mary Moffitt; three children, Kathy Hoy (Tom), John Moffitt (Barbara), and Ed Moffitt (Karen); grandchildren, Christopher Hoy (Kristin), Kari Livesay (Mark), Kevin Hoy (Tara), Michael Hoy, Andrew Hoy, John Douglas Moffitt, and Elizabeth Moffitt; and great-grandchildren, Liam Hoy, and Ryan and Owen Hoy. He is also survived by Mary Moffitt's children, who considered him a wonderful surrogate father: John Ankeney (Pauline), David Ankeney (Barbara), Martha A. Joiner (Jim), Mary Anne Javed (John); grandchildren, David Ankeney Jr. (Emily), Jennifer Steele, John Charles Ankeney (Andrea), Jihan Javed, Javairia Yankowy (Luke), Jahangir Javed, Jana Javed; and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Moffitt was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a former prisoner of war (20 months). He was a former commander of local and state ex-POW organizations and a national director of ex-POWs. Mr. Moffitt was also a former commander of American Legion Post 84. He was a member of Westhampton United Methodist Church for over 50 years, where he had served as a trustee and a former Cub Scout master. Services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 8, in the Mausoleum Chapel of Westhampton Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 4600 Cox Road #130, Glen Allen, Va. 23060, or a charity of your choice. Arrangements by the Central Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home.
