Bessie Carter Obituary

CARTER, Bessie Bocock, died October 11, 2008 in Charlottesville at the age of 79. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Carter. She is survived by three sons, Robert Hill Carter, married to Carol Stepka Carter, John Bocock Carter, married to Page Stephenson Carter, and Andrew Beirne Carter, married to Elizabeth Hammond Carter. She is also survived by a brother, Frederic Scott Bocock; and a sister, Mary Buford Hitz. She had eight grandchildren, Elisabeth Hill Carter, Alice Scott Carter, Mary Robert Carter, Lee Noland Carter, Eliza Page Carter, Harriet Bocock Carter, Robert Keene Carter, and Oleg Friend Carter. She had 14 nieces and nephews. She served as President to the Garden Club of Virginia, and chaired the Restoration Committee. She was a member of the Conservation Council of the Garden Club of America. She served on the boards of the Virginia Chapter of The Nature Conservancy and the Piedmont Environmental Council. She was a founding board member of both the Virginia League of Conservation Voters and the Council of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. A graveside service will be held at Christ Church, Glendower, near Keene, Va., at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 13. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Garden Club of Virginia Restorations Committee (gcvirginia.org/restorations) or to Christ Church Glendower at P.O. Box 337 Scottsville, Va. 24590.

My sincere sympathies to the whole Carter family for the loss of your mother and grandmother. Bessie lead such a wonderful life, and her service to historic preservation in Virginia is her public legacy never to be forgotten. Her charm, grace, hard work and especially her children and grandchildren are testament to a life well-lived. We are forever grateful for having known her.
