Ernestine Reynolds Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Oct. 12, 2008.
REYNOLDS, Ernestine "Toni", Heaven is rejoicing at the arrival of Ernestine "Toni" Mason Reynolds. Toni, 97, bid a peaceful bon voyage to this world on October 9. She was a woman who touched so many lives in so many places. Born Ernestine Calfapietra on January 4, 1911 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she graduated from high school at 16 and began working in 1928 for Richard Reynolds, founder of Reynolds Metals Company. She lived in Richmond Virginia for many years both before and after World War II. It was during this period she changed her name to Mason from Calfapietra. During World War II Toni heard that the military was in need of translators. Since Toni was fluent in Italian, French and English, she contacted The Red Cross and was signed up that very day. They shipped her to Africa the very next day. She served in both North Africa and Italy. It was during an air raid, she met her future husband, Colonel Rennie L Reynolds. She entertained troops with the USO appearing with the Oscar nominated actor Adolphe Menjou as well as other notable artists. Toni was very active as a performer in the theatre and singer of opera and light opera. After the war, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her service to her country by President Harry S. Truman. Following the war, Toni moved to Dallas in 1949 to marry the young man she had met in the air raid shelter. She continued working for Reynolds Metals in Dallas until her retirement in 1976. After retiring from Reynolds Metals, she began her next career managing the operations of a small business and directing individual personal finances. She remained active in these endeavors until she finally retired again in April 2006 at age 95. Toni was a woman of strong convictions, great patriotism and a giving heart. She donated freely to charities especially the Red Cross. There was a soft spot in her heart for veterans and children. She had a beautiful sense of humor and was known for her quick retorts and wit. She frequently corresponded with The White House to express her thoughts and opinions. She is survived by a niece, Betty Calfapietra of Glendale, New York; a nephew, Vincent Calfapietra of Manchester, New Jersey; and a sister-in-law Anna Calfapietra also of New Jersey. She also has a stepson, Robert Reynolds of Portland, Oregon. Her friends who love her dearly are legion and span the globe. Visitation will be Sunday, October 12 at the Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home from 12 to 2 p.m. Funeral services will be on Monday, October 13 at Noon at Sparkman/Hillcrest Northwest Hwy. Chapel, Rev. John Libone, officiating. She will be interred at Hillcrest Memorial Park as well.

I met Toni through my parents when I was around 10 years old. My father, a Dallas attorney, had represented her in some ligation. And she soon became a part of the family.

Over the years, we would ask her to tell and retell us stories of being a nurse in WWII. And how she had a beautiful suit made out of white silk from a parachute. To say the least, Toni was a wonderful storyteller.

A true lady of Dallas, a city she so much loved. Toni had style and class. A lover of opera, politics, and proud of her Italian heritage.

Selfishly, my heart sinks to think that she is no longer with us. And to think that the visits with tea, cookies and great conversation are no more.

Blessings to you my dear, Toni. I love you and will miss you.

Toni and my father, Rick Detjen, worked together at Reynolds Metals. While growing up my parents always spoke of Toni. I don't remember meeting her when I was younger because I was so little when we left the Dallas area. But I do know how many people's lives she has touched. Every Christmas growing up my parents and my brother and I would receive a really nice letter from Toni, letting us know about her many adventures and that she was still working. Sometimes we'd even get letters during the year. I always enjoyed reading about what had been going on in her life. God knows that she lived a very fulfilling 97 years! What a great woman. In the past 5 or 6 years, now that I have a family of my own, I have made it a point to call Toni as often as I could. I remember speaking with her on January 4th of this year. I called her to wish her a happy 97th birthday. Her mind was as sharp as a tack... at 97 years old. She told me many stories that day. I know that our family and many others will greatly miss Toni. She has made a great impact on a lot of lives. Now I know that she is walking along side God and looking at all of the great things she has done in her life. We love you Toni and we will miss you!

I have lived across the hall from Mrs. Reynolds since 1999. She was one of the sweetest women I have ever met, and she was always so kind to me. I just read her obituary- what an amazing life she had! My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of loss.

I will always remember Toni as my first mentor at Reynolds. She had a rare insight into the workings at Reynolds that made her a valuable resource for me as well as our customers. Her energy, humor and enthusiastic spirit were contagious in the office.
She treated her coworkers and customers as personal friends and these relationships continued even after her retirement.

Toni was a part of my sister's and my whole life as our father, Bill Condon, worked with Toni at Reynolds Metals. We visited her at every opportunity. Even my husband enjoyed our visits with Toni and listening to the amazing experiences she had in life.

She was such an incredible woman. Such a role model for what a person can accomplish no matter where you come from or how much you have.

She was one of the richest people I knew when it came to friends. I just wish Idaho were closer to Texas so that I could have been there to give her a last hug and kiss and say good-bye.

I love you Toni - and I know that heaven now resounds with the music of your voice.
