John Cullinan Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Oct. 24, 2008.
CULLINAN, John J. Jr., departed this life on October 22, 2008 after a courageous battle with several life- threatening illnesses. Born June 16, 1920 in Richmond, Va., John was the son of John J. and Annie G. Cullinan. This lifelong Richmonder served in the U.S. Army during WWII and fought in France and Belgium. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Margaret Wilson Cullinan. John was a devoted husband, father and brother. He is survived by his son, John J. Cullinan III and wife, Carol; his brother, Michael J. Cullinan; and his grandson, Michael H. Cullinan; stepgrandchildren, James H. Godwin III and Nan G. Balderson; and stepgreat-granddaughters, Layne Balderson and Jamie Godwin. John belonged to the Tuckahoe Moose Lodge until his health prevented him from attending, and retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation in 1986. Because his grandfather emigrated from Ireland, John was always proud of his Irish heritage. He was known for his lively sense of humor and contagious laugh, and was a friend to all who met him, including his caregivers at Elizabeth House and Crump Manor Nursing Home. The family will receive friends at Bliley's-Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., Friday, October 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery Saturday, October 25, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of the Virginias, 1742 E. Parham Road, Richmond, Va. 23228, or online at https://www.kidneyva.org/ secure/donatenow.jsp.

John, Mike, Carol and children, my deepest sympathy to you all.

I had so wanted to see Uncle Johnny before coming back to Arizona.

I have such fond memories of that sense of humor he had when we were kids. And your mothers warm smile as well.

I left Saluda on Oct 20th, I am so sorry I won't be there for you and family. Anita called me when she was notified.

The Kidney Foundation is very dear to my heart as Pat had one removed in March 08. A wonderful choice.

I will keep you all in my prayers.
