Harold Coates Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Nov. 3 to Nov. 4, 2008.
COATES, Harold Jefferson, 78, of Palmyra, accepted a special invitation from God on October 31, 2008 to fill out a foursome for a new premiere golf tournament at the Pearly Gates Golf Club. God knew he could count on Harold for at least a few holes-in-one and sweetened the offer by creating a glorious fall day for his journey, painting all the trees in the gorgeous fall colors that Harold always loved. Harold passed away peacefully, with a smile on his face, and undoubtedly ready to share a few good jokes with his new golf buddies. Harold left his wife, Evelyn T. Coates (T-Me) with over 53 years of wonderful memories. He is also survived by two sons, Harold Jefferson Coates (Jeff) and wife, Joyce, of Louisa; Christopher T. Coates (Chris) of Richmond; and one daughter, Carol C. Sylvester and her husband, John, of Richmond; three brothers, John Coates and wife, Mildred, of Ellicott City, Md., Wilford Coates of Buckingham County, James Coates of Nelson County; one sister, Virginia Griswold of Silver Spring, Md.; one brother-in-law, August Thieme of Goochland County; and a host of nieces and nephews and good friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at the Waldrop Baptist Church, 447 Waldrop Church Road in Louisa County. Interment will be held immediately after the service at the Marks Family Cemetery, 1617 Bickley Rd. A fellowship will follow at the church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. The family expresses a heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Laurels Nursing Home in Charlottesville for the love and exceptional care they provided to Harold. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lake Monticello Fire and Rescue Squad, 10 Slice Road, Palmyra, Va. 22963, or Jefferson Area Bureau of Aging (JABA) of Charlottesville, 674 Hillsdale Road, Charlottesville, Va. 22901. Friends may send condolences to the family at www.hillandwood.com.
