Warm Summer Sun

Warm summer sun,
Shine kindly here,
Warm southern wind,
Blow softly here.
Green sod above,
Lie light, lie light.
Good night, dear heart,
Good night, good night.

My beloved mother was a remarkable woman of substance. Strong-willed and tenacious, she was also kindhearted and generous, and she cared deeply about others.

She had a wide circle of friends and she showed them her love and was faithful to each of them. Her life's motto was "JOY" -- Jesus, Others and Yourself. She lived that motto and she put it into daily practice in so many ways.

Needless to say, I'm going to miss her terribly; particularly her wise counsel, her compassion and her great sense of humor. She lived life with gusto and purpose. Even in her last years she had a healthy interest in local, state, national and world events. She was a voracious reader, had a sharp wit to the end and would have been pleased to know I'm writing this for all to read via a computer and the Internet, though she didn't own a computer and never used one.

At the end of her life, only days before she died, she requested an absentee ballot, so she could cast her vote for our new President. I know I am biased, but I submit to you that my mother was what some would call "quality goods."

In her last years, she helped start a food bank at her residence, Guardian Place, an independent living center for seniors in Richmond. She was the organization's first president. She was proud of that, and rightly so. Her efforts to help get it established have meant that hundreds of seniors on limited incomes have benefited and will continue to benefit from this wonderful program.

She was a devoted member of her church in Richmond, First Baptist, and was engaged in many activities there over a number of years.

My family was so fortunate to have had this wonderful woman in our life for so long to help guide us, inspire us and teach us.

Thank you for visiting this site, and thank you for remembering my mom.

Best wishes from her loving son, Nick Brown, of Greensboro, N.C.
