Paul Kawana Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Nov. 25 to Nov. 29, 2008.
KAWANA, Paul E., 78, after a long illness peacefully entered into eternal rest on November 20, 2008 with loving family at his side. Born in Sharon, Pa. in 1930, Paul moved to Virginia in 1964, living in Franklin, Va. for 12 years, and then resided at his beloved Lake Caroline, Ladysmith, Va., for 30 years. The career Paul enjoyed most was as an Insurance Sales Manager for Globe Life. He retired in 1992. Paul was active in retirement, creating recreational programs at the Lake, especially the Lake Caroline Bass Club. Fishing, hunting and football games were his favorite pastimes. Paul also loved worshipping in his spiritual home of Carmel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Katherine Kawana of Sharon, Pa.; and his first wife, Patience Lyons Kawana, also of Sharon. Left to cherish his memory are Patricia Kawana, his best friend and wife of 31 years; four children, Paula Toler (Calvin K.), Tom Kawana (Sonia), Kim Agnew (Jim) and Gary Kawana (Caroline); two stepchildren, Marty Mathurin (Rhonda) and Jae Robinson; nine grandchildren, Calvin H. Toler, Daniel Agnew, Tania Kawana, Tiffany, Cameron, Seth and Savannah Kawana, and Virginia and Victoria Mathurin; one great-grandchild, Calvin A Toler; three sisters, Mary Lou Garrett (Chuck), Carol Miklos, and Donna Komocsin (Nick). Paul also leaves his cousins, nieces, nephews, and many special friends. We are grateful to all of the staff at the Gables Memory Impairment Unit of Westminster Canterbury for their wonderful care of Paul over the past two and a half years, especially the loving aides who were his daily personal caregivers. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, November 30, at Carmel Baptist Church in Ruther Glen, Va. (Exit #104 off 95, drive toward Rt #1). A memorial service will also be held at Westminster Canterbury Richmond on December 9 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, we would be grateful for contributions to the WCR Employees Christmas Fund or Westminster Canterbury Fellowship Fund, 1600 Westbrook Ave., Richmond, Va. 23227. Also to Carmel Baptist Church, Box 52, Ruther Glen, Va. 22546.

Pat, we're so sorry to hear about Paul's death. We will miss him so much. Paul was a wonderful neighbor and friend to us. He never missed anything going on in our neighborhood. I can still hear him yelling across the street to us every time we were outside. "Hey Cliff" Paul also payed close attention to our oldest child Jay who was both physically and mentally challenged. Jay loved that man. Our youngest child, Chance would cut his yard and Paul would be running right beside him like the "inspector general" making sure he did the job right. Paul made me laugh. The love for his wife, Pat would remind Cliff and I of a match made in heaven. Cliff and I will be praying for everyone. Keep your head high for Paul is in a much better place. Cliff, Linda, Jay and Chance.
