Sarah Schaefer Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Dec. 7, 2008.
SCHAEFER, Sarah P., of Chesterfield, died of complications due to Alzheimer's Disease on Friday, December 5, 2008 after waging a long long and unbelievably courageous battle with that horrendous disease. She leaves to cherish her memory Robert, her devoted husband of 45 years; her beloved children, son, Thomas and wife, Lori with granddaughter, Kelsey and grandson, Kyle; son, Sean and wife, Robin with grandson, Corey and granddaughters, Taylor and Megan; son, Robert Jr. and wife, Jennifer with grandsons, Tristen and Trey and granddaughter, Mikayla; daughter, Kathleen and husband, Scott with granddaughters, Kourtney, Sommer and Holly; and her sister, Jane Philbin of Lynbrook, N.Y. Sarah, a dedicated and devoted mother for her four beautiful children began a second career as a Medical Assistant after her children were grown. Her life was cut short when she was diagnosed in her late forties with "the probable early onset of Alzheimer's Disease or a related dementia", which gradually robbed her of her memories, personality and very being. A Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 2480 Batterson Ave., Powhatan, Va. 23139. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the mass at St. John Neumann Church. Interment 1 p.m. at Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia. The family would like to publicly acknowledge, praise and thank those dedicated and special "Angels" in the Clover Hill neighborhood at Lucy Corr Village, as well as the phenomenal nursing staff and "Angels" from Crater Community Hospice, who permitted Sarah to leave this world in peace and with dignity. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Sarah's name to the Crater Community Hospice, Inc., 840 West Roslyn Road, Suite E, Colonial Heights, Va. 23834 or the Greater Richmond Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 4600 Cox Road., Suite 130, Glen Allen, Va. 23060.

Dear Bob:
Sarah has just completed a journey no one should have to make. As her caregiver, companion and devoted husband, you walked every step of the way with her-a remarkable task. If medals were given for love and devotion, yours would be platinum. Deep breaths, long walks and time will serve you well.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to you and your daughter and sons.
