William Webb Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Jan. 19 to Jan. 20, 2009.
WEBB, William H., DDS, 71, of Manakin-Sabot, died at home from a brain tumor on January 17, 2009, surrounded by his family. Bill was born in 1937 to William Howard Webb Sr. and Virginia Taylor Webb. After obtaining a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Florida in 1960, he worked briefly as a chemical engineer at DuPont before serving as a lieutenant in the Army for two years. He then returned to Richmond and graduated from the VCU School of Dentistry in 1968. His professional career was devoted to his private practice in Bon Air and serving as an Adjunct Faculty member at VCU for over 20 years, teaching restorative dentistry. Bill was a member of the Richmond Dental Study Club for 25 years. After 30 years of general dentistry practice, he retired in 2000. Bill was an avid world traveler, visiting over 15 countries in the last three years of his life alone. He also was a skilled gardener who loved harvesting his produce and sharing it with friends and neighbors. He was an accomplished oil painter, skier, sailor, amateur historian and woodworker, crafting a reproduction of a Sam Maloof table around which he enjoyed entertaining his friends and family. Bill especially enjoyed serving as chief electrician for his son's business, The Clearfield Company, in Manakin-Sabot. In retirement he served on the Board of Directors of Goochland Habitat for Humanity, as a volunteer at the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services Dental Clinic, driving Meals on Wheels, and as an elder at Hebron Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Wright Webb; a son and daughter-in-law, Hunter and Kirsten Webb; and a daughter and son-in-law, Drs. Jennie and Jim Wright; and six grandchildren, Caroline and Natalie Webb, and Mary, Gavin, Alyssa and Sarah Wright. A Service of Remembrance will be held at Hebron Presbyterian Church, 1040 Shallow Well Road, Manakin-Sabot, Va. 23103 at 11 a.m. Friday, January 23, with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to Goochland Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 1016, Goochland, Va. 23063, or Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services - Dental Program, P.O. Box 116, Goochland, Va. 23063.

I just found out this morning about Dr. Webb's passing when I went to Dr. Wilkinson's office for my dental check-up. I was very saddened to hear about this. I starting going to Dr. Webb when I was 21 years old. I was frightened to death of dentists having grown up with many painful dentist experiences. He promised to never hurt me and he never did. That was 40 years ago. When I moved to California, I always came back to him for my dental work.

Hello Webb family,

I did not have the honor of knowing Mr. Webb, but I certainly know his son, Hunter. So, if Hunter is walking in his Dad's shadow, what a WONDERFUL person Mr. Webb must have been! Best wishes, and Godspeed, to the family.

Dear Hunter and family,
Please accept my most sincere condolences for the loss of your father Bill. While his brief illness lessened the shock, it is the loss that is devastating. I hope you will ever feel enriched by his memories like he enriched your lives with his exciting professional career and being such a pilar of the community.
With great sorrow,

We are sorry for your loss. Although the time we knew him was brief we were fortunate to have met Mr. Webb. It was a great pleasure to have worked with him on Hunter and Kirsten’s new home. He was generous in sharing the stories and experiences in his life as well as his wonderful produce. We are blessed to have known him.

Bill was one of the most interesting people we are lucky to know. His family came first, patients second, and he just loved life. His intellectual curiosity was immense and we all should have more friends like him. I haven't seen him for 15 years and memories of our conversations still bring a smile to my face. Everyone who knew him was blessed. My best wishes to his family.

We'll miss Bill. I'll always remember that trip we took together to Colonial Heights for a political convention. I can't even recall who was running or who won, but we had a good time!

Anne & I had no idea of Bill's immense woodworking talents until we saw Mary and him at our favorite New Years Day party one year and were left in awe when we realized all the work he and Hunter had done in that home.

Our best and warmest wishes to Mary, Hunter and family. We're counting on seeing all of you soon and often.
