We met W.T. at a leukemia support group and found him to be a very personable and brave man as he confronted his very difficult type of cancer. Our condolences to the family in their loss.

I was so sad to hear of W.T.'s passing. W.T. and Dot both served as volunteers for the Youth Group when they attended New Hope Baptist in Skipwith and I was lucky enough to get to know them. They both touched my heart and life. W.T.'s letters got me through a lot of rough patches in my college life. He will always be in my thoughts.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of loss. Mr. Hobbs was a very special person. He used to read to my Pre-K class and was always great with the children. He will be missed by all of us at GES.

It is with great sadness and joy that I reflect on the passing of my friend WT Hobbs. You know, I never knew what WT stood for until I attended his funeral. The sadness that I feel is simply my human grief at losing such a friend and genuine individual as the Walking Turtle. My joy comes from the knowledge that Our Father has given us. I know that WT has gone HOME. I pray to meet him there when it is time for me to leave this frail earthly body behind and move on to the new body that is promised to each of us who accepts God’s son as his saviour.
I think of WT whenever I walk on the Appalachian Trail which passes just a mile away and whenever I come across something interesting in nature. I too am like WT and allow my thoughts and opinions to be know both to the good and …well it made conversations with him a joy and a breath of fresh air from our ‘politically correct’ society.
Wt was a man of action. He went a pursued his dreams and ambitions. His love was overflowing and was evident in the foster care he and Dorothy gave, in the time he volunteered to the Boy Scouts, in the love and dedication he poured into reading for children in school. His outdoor accomplishments of traveling down the entire James River and hiking as a through hiker for more than 2000 miles on the AT were yet another accomplishment of a dream and goal he set for himself and these he finished not a ‘young’ man. He loved to introduce others to his interests seldom did a bit of time spent with WT not end with others leaving with a new found fact or knowledge.
I met WT as he was walking the AT and ever since the day we met I have discovered more and more that WT Hobbs was a man with a life that was exuberant and it was apparent that his cup runneth over with those things that are most important in life – Faith, Hope and Charity (Love) and the greatest of these we are told – and WT knew – was LOVE
As our faith allows; we are seprated but for a short time. Until we meet again....

We were so fortunate to have been related to W.T., to be a part of his family. We were even more fortunate to be a part of his circle of friends, though his group of friends numbered in the thousands. We're mourning your passage, W.T., but we'll never mourn your life -- we'll just try to hold it up as an example from which to learn. Still, we will miss you.

I first met Mr. Hobbs at Greensville Elementary School where he would visit and bring such wonderful science adventures to the classrooms such as live catfish and huge turtles that could turn over on their own. The students were thrilled see him and he brought such knowledge to so many. He had a kind and gentle way about him. My son will always treasure the nice handwritten letter Mr. Hobbs gave him when he obtained his Eagle Scout rank. He also became active at Main Street Baptist Church where I attend. He was such a great participant in our Easter Drama. I am so saddened to learn of his death. He will be missed.

Mr. Hobbs always had a smile on his face, but especially when he was at GES with the children. I think he loved them just as much as they loved him. Although no longer here in body, his soul will definitely continue to be felt here at GES

Mr. Hobbs was a beloved patron of the GES Library. I always enjoyed talking with him as he browsed the shelves, looking for just the right books for his 2nd graders. He was always so meticulous in recording the titles so that he didn't read the same story twice! I loved listening to the tales of his Appalachian travels. He was such a kind, gentle soul. He will be missed.

Mr. Hobbs will be missed at G.E.S. I will miss seeing him at the counter in the office in the morning and afternoon. We are losing a member of the family, the G.E.S. Family.

Mr. Hobbs will be greatly missed around the Elementary School. He made such an impact on my boys lives. Both of my boys enjoyed his visits so much and looked forward to what he was going to have for them. Find comfort in knowing that your father made a big difference in the lives of alot of children. He was a wonderful, caring person that was especially loved by two little boys from Mrs. Moore's second grade class. We will keep your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. I first met W.T. when he was Scoutmaster of troop 455 in Chase City. He taught me and a lot of kids to enjoy the outdoors and all it has to offer. A kind soul that will surely be missed by the many people he touched.

I will miss Mr. Hobbs. I will remember the tadpoles, turtles, and other items he brought and shared with us at school. I will miss him in our Easter Program at Main Street Baptist. May God bless the Family.

What a lovely, kind and gentle soul. Mr. Hobbs read to the Pre-Kindergarten classes at Greensville Elementary School as well as second grade. Although he did not come to my room, Mrs. Pope shared her time with him once in a while. One of his favorite stories (and the children and teachers as well!) was 'The Wide-Mouthed Frog'....Mrs. Pope said that no one could read it like Mr. Hobbs. What a blessing to the children (and teachers) in this community! His smiling face will be missed around the halls of Greensville Elementary. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Fondly, Meg Lumpkin

There are no words that will completely convey how many children's lives were touched by Mr. Hobbs. He was a very important part of the second grade at Greensville Elementary for ten years and read hundreds of books to hundreds of children- all on his own time because he was a compassionate man. Personally, Mr. Hobbs came to my classroom for almost 15 years and I will always treasure the time that he gave to my students. My heart is heavy and I will miss him so much. The world was a better place with Mr. Hobbs in it. I feel lucky to have known him.
