Robert Chandler Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Feb. 18, 2009.
CHANDLER, Robert Roy, died at his home in Williamsburg on Saturday, February 14. In a life dedicated to theatre, he worked in Hollywood with Otto Preminger in "Tell Me You Love Me, Juney Moon" and "Advice and Consent" and for the Glendale Centre Theatre. Here in Colonial Williamsburg, he was a well known and loved historic character interpreter, usually as Mr. Joseph Kidd. "Mr. Kidd" went as far as Old Deerfield, Massachusetts, and Bermuda to talk to people about the fashionable furnishings of his time. Bob's genuine love for young people and depth of knowledge made him a treasure guide to the historic area. In all he did he gave 100%. Bob was born to John and Mary Balch Chandler on August 6, 1936 in Petersburg. He is survived by his wife, Carlotto Crissey Chandler; brother, John Edward Chandler Jr.; and sisters, Shirley Chandler, Clara Ann Chandler Parham and Brooks Parham. A graveside service will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Robert Chandler's name. Online condolences can be registered at www.bucktroutfuneralhome.net Bucktrout of Williamsburg Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

I directed Bob in Our Town at Peninsula Community Theatre. He was a pro - self-effacing and charming, too. I will miss him.

Bob was so very talented and multi-facetd in every way. Don and I had the priviledge to share the stage with this wonderful man in "70 Girls 70"(1999) at PCT. He was a joy to work with and I'll long remember how he brought the house down with his line, "Operation, Operation", and it was even greater watching him perform and hearing him sing with his melodious voice.
What a guy! He will be sorely missed.

Bob was one of the first character interpreters I ever encountered in CW, and I adored him. He was a man of amazing talents who instantly charmed everyone he met.

Bob, you are loved and will be missed. Rest in peace, my friend.

I always enjoyed Bob's humor. He was always there with a joke and a smile. We have all lost a gentle man. I raise a pint and sing out "Huzzah!
Lad, Huzzah!"

I will always remember Bob fondly for his performance and professionalism in the productions of 12 Angry Men and 1776 I directed over the past few years. He was a treasure in more ways than one as he regaled with stories and anecdotes from his film and stage experiences. Bob was always kind, soft spoken and a real gentleman of the theater. I will miss him as will all those who enjoyed him on stage and on the grounds of the Colonial Capitol.
Fare thee well,Bob.

I am very sorry to hear of Bob's passing. I worked with him at Colonial Williamsburg and Peninsula Community Theatre. He was a true gentleman. And I will never forget his Bette Davis story.

We are saddened to learn of Bob's passing. He was wonderful to our family each time we came to Williamsburg on vacation from Memphis. Bob was instrumental in our son, Michael, auditioning for and acting in the VA Shakespeare Festival in 1988. He made the 18th Century come alive for us. Our lives were enriched for having known him.

Our sincere condolences to Bob's family.
