Elizabeth Fairly Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Feb. 22, 2009.
FAIRLY, Elizabeth Adair "Liz," 85, passed away peacefully February 16, 2009, in Richmond. She was born in Narrows, Va., on May 28, 1923, and grew up in Pulaski. She graduated from Pulaski High School in 1940 where she was a member of The National Beta Club. She graduated from Mary Washington College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1944. She was selected to appear in the 1942 to 1943 Edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges." She was a member of Bon Air Presbyterian Church since 1957 and was very active in its ministries. Mrs. Fairly and her late husband, Dr. John L Fairly Jr., a pulmonary specialist, played a key role in the location, architecture and philosophy of the present church when Bon Air Presbyterian outgrew the original 1900s little white church on Buford Road. She was an elder, Sunday School teacher and youth leader among her many activities in the church. Several years ago, she established a committee to provide transportation to church for those who were unable to drive themselves. Mrs. Fairly was very involved in Virginia politics and served on the 3rd District Democratic Committee, the Richmond City Committee and in the Woman's Democratic Club. She spent several decades volunteering her time and energy for her party. She was a longtime member of the League of Women Voters. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Clifton Hudson Fairly; and a brother, Bennett Fulton Adair Jr. She is survived by her son, Keith MacLaurin Fairly, and his wife, Teresa, of Mechanicsville; grandchildren, Jessica and Chalin Fairly of Mechanicsville; grandson, Clifton Bennett Fairly of Richmond; sister, Frances Adair Edmonson of Harrisonburg, Va.; sister-in-law, Mary Lillian Hupper "Pixie," Falls Church, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, February 23, 2009, at Bon Air Presbyterian Church, 9201 West Huguenot Road, followed by a reception at the church. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bon Air Presbyterian Church Memorial Benevolence Fund or the Cares Fund Company #9, 8001 Buford Road, Richmond, Va. 23235, a non-profit division of the Chesterfield County Fire & Rescue Squad. Interment will be private.
