Richard Carroll Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Aug. 14, 2009.
CARROLL, Richard W. "Dick," died Wednesday at home in Charlottesville, Va. Born in Altoona, Pa. on September 20, 1918, Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Barbara Carroll; his sister-in-law, Ruth Carroll; his children, Chuck Carroll, Marsha Carroll, Steve Carroll, Jane Hilton and Ann Hardin; his grandchildren, Nate, Chris, Mike, Tim, Jessica, Leigh, Craig, Nicole, Elizabeth and Andrew, who range from 31 to two years in age; and his great-granddaughter, Ella. His brother and close friend, Jack Carroll, also of Charlottesville, preceded him in death. During World War II, after graduating from the University of Maryland, Dick worked as a naval architect in the Norfolk Naval Shipyards, where he met his wife. After the war, he joined Virginia Electric and Power Co. for a long career in engineering, sales and management. The family lived in many parts of Virginia, finally moving to Charlottesville in 1979, where Dick worked as vice president of VEPCO's western district until 1984. After retirement, he exercised his home handyman skills and his love of University of Maryland teams of all kinds. Constantly patient, kind, courteous and diligent in the performance of his duties, our dad and granddaddy served as an example of how to live a happy and honorable life and he will be in our hearts forever. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, Va. 22911. A memorial gathering will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, August 15, 2009, at Teague Funeral Home, 2260 Ivy Road, in Charlottesville. Friends may sign the guest register at teaguefuneralhome.com.
