Evelyn Newell Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Sep. 4 to Sep. 10, 2009.
NEWELL, Evelyn Vest, 93, of Richmond, passed away September 2, 2009. She was predeceased by her husband, James H. Newell. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara N. Kanto, of Augusta, Ga., and Donna N. Tompkins and husband, Seldon, of Richmond; six grandchildren, Elizabeth T. Neal, Meredith K. Sherrill, Katherine K. Doyle, S. Taylor Tompkins Jr., William P. Kanto III and James N. Tompkins; and 13 great-grandchildren. Evelyn was a devoted member of Westover Hills United Methodist Church and long time member of Willow Oaks Country Club. However, first and foremost for Gangan (or Gigi) was her family. Throughout her life, Evelyn shared her time in several organizations. She was president of the PTA, Forest Hills Junior Woman's Club, James River Woman's Club, Southside Day Nursery and the Joy Club. At her first church, Berryman United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday school and was a Girl Scout Leader. Evelyn and the love of her life, Jim, traveled the world extensively as well as cruised the waters in their boat, "Ebarlee". Evelyn always managed to get in a round of golf or a game of bridge, but never were her hands idle, she continuously had hand work in her lap. The family would like to thank the care givers at Lakewood Manor for their kindness. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 11, 2009, at 12 noon, at Westover Hills United Methodist Church. The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lakewood Manor, 1900 Lauderdale Dr., Richmond, Va., 23238, or Westover Hills United Methodist Church, 1705 Westover Hills Blvd., Richmond, Va., 23225.

Dear Barbara and Donna,

I recall so many memories of our families sharing fun times together at our homes on Hillcrest and Sylvan Road, down the river and many important "life" occasions.

I especially remember your Mom telling me how important my tenth birthday was because for the rest of my life my age would have two digits.
She knit several beautiful sweaters for my son, her godson, Chip.
I remember her love for Boston Terriers, especially Spike and Augie.

I'm so glad she enjoyed such a long and active life, enriched by such a loving family.
May you find comfort in a lifetime of so many wonderful memories during this difficult time.
My daughter, Sharyn Pugh and I plan to attend the memorial service on Friday.

Fondly, Jean Johnson Kemp

Dear Barbara, Donna and your families,

Scottie just sent me the link to your mother's obituary. How very sad I am to hear of her death. She was always so fun to be with and so very kind to the entire Savage family.

Sincerely, Geri Savage Moers
