Hobart Thomas Obituary

THOMAS, Hobart "Mac" McKinley Jr., died peacefully on September 4, 2009, in Culpeper, Virginia. Mac was a loving husband, son, brother, father, and grandfather who was born in Culpeper on June 15, 1923. He graduated from Culpeper County High School, Fishburne Military Academy, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He was a veteran of World War II, serving three years in the Army Air Force. Mac was co-owner of the Nehi Bottling Company in Culpeper for 30 years until the company was sold in 1978. Incidentally, the Nehi building now serves as the home of the Culpeper Rescue Squad. Mac was a longtime director of Second Bank and Trust, beginning in 1960 until the mid-1990s. He served as a deacon and elder of the Culpeper Presbyterian Church, and also served as a teacher and superintendent of its Sunday School. Mac was also active for many years with the local American Red Cross, serving as its treasurer, and was a longtime officer of elections for the West Fairfax voting precinct. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Joan Lane Thomas; daughter, Anne Thomas Mikula and her husband, Ned; son, Travis Herndon Thomas; and son, Jeffrey Lane Thomas and his wife, Nancy, all of Richmond. Survivors also include eight grandchildren, Matthew, Lane, Sarah and Hobie Mikula, Sunny and Austin Thomas, and Caroline and Mac Thomas. Survivors also include his sister, Charlotte Thomas Partrick of Greensboro, N.C. and many nieces and nephews. Mac was preceded in death by his parents, Hobart McKinley Thomas and Carol Brown Thomas of Culpeper. Memorial services will be held at the Culpeper Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 with Dr. Wayne Bernardo officiating. Interment will be private in Culpeper Masonic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Culpeper Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 215 S. Main Street, Culpeper, Va. 22701. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Clore-English Funeral Home of Culpeper.

Dear Joan, what a wonderful person Mac was I will always remember how cheerful he was and how he would always say "just tell me when you want me to move" if he thought he was in my way, and how how he didn't think you got enough respect for all the stray cats you fed. He loved you and spoke so well of you always and I was personally impressed with your loving relationship. I think of you so often, Bobbie
