Karine Ruby Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 29, 2009.
CHAMONIX, France (AP) - Karine Ruby, a former Olympic snowboarding champion who had been training to become a mountain guide, died Friday in a climbing accident on Mont Blanc. She was 31.

Ruby was roped to other climbers when she and some members of the group fell into a deep crack in the glacier on the way down the mountain, Chamonix police official Laurent Sayssac said.

A 38-year-old man from the Paris region died in the fall, and a 27-year-old man was evacuated by helicopter with serious injuries and hospitalized, Sayssac added.

French Prime Minister Francois Fillon called Ruby an "exceptional sportswoman."

"Karine incarnated the emergence of snowboarding in France," Fillon said in a statement. "The people of France will hold on to the memory of her talent and her joie de vivre."

Ruby won a gold medal in the giant slalom at the 1998 Nagano Olympics and a silver in the parallel giant slalom at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. She was a six-time world champion with 65 snowboard World Cup victories.

She retired after the 2006 Turin Olympics, where she was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the snowboardcross event. Ruby had since been working toward becoming a mountain guide and was expected to finish her training in the coming weeks.

Sadness is what many believe should be expressed after the passing of someone treasured or loved. Karine Ruby lived her life to the fullest. She got to participate in events many of us only see on tv. She is an amazing person. Hopefully in the next life she will do something different! RIP <33

Karine obviously enjoyed the rush that the spirit gets by being challenged and conquering the fear most of us have. She was a supreme athelete and I know she will be remembered as such. God Bless her and her family and all of those touched by her beautiful soul. Karine proved that girls rock!

Karine Ruby was such a shining example of the true Olympic spirit. I send my thoughts of hope to her family at this difficult time.

I had to opportunity to work at the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France and I know how challenging and dangerous those french alps can be.

Karine had a stomach of steel to race down the mountains, fearless. I remember watching the skiers ski down Val D'Isere in 1992 and they skied straight down the mountain all out. Many of them had terrible crashes attempting to get to the bottom of the runs.

It's so tragic that those same alps that gave her such joy during her skiing career also brought such a swift end to a very promising life and future for her.

I will hold her smiling face in her Chamonix hat in my mind with the alps in the background. She took on the risk learning to mountain climb, so at least she was doing something she loved when she abruptly left this life.

Abientot Karine!

To the friends and family of Karine. I am not an athlete, and I actually despise the NY winters, however I remember watching Karine and she appeared not to work at snowboarding, it seemed that she truly enjoyed the sport and it showed in each and every performance that she did. When I heard of her tragic accident I felt sorrow. Then it came to me that she died doing exactly what she wanted. The biggest gift that we can give to ourselves and our families is to be true and she did that in all that she did.

I know that does not lessen the pain, however do know that God is now watching over her, as she is watching over you.

i just wantedto say i am very sorry for your loss. i don't know your pain but i do know the pain of loosing someone to death that you love. as most greving persons will tell you the lost of someone you are close to and love it is truly the last enemy(death). i want to share with you a real hope for your and my loved ones.
please read:
John 5:28.29 - it is a promise from God of a resurrection hope.
Psalms 37:10,11,29 - shows where this will take place(right here on the earth).
Romans 5:12 - explains why these things happen.
Revelation 21:4 - shows death will be done away with forever in the near future.

To the Ruby Family;

I was in the process of setting up my 17 year old son "Eason Cody Nelson" [email protected] and I was looking at other sites getting ideas on what to do. Karine Ruby's name amazingly just jumped out at me and drew me into her memorial site. I then needed to read everything about her. Karine's life seemed similar yet different to my son's life. My son Cody was killed in a dirt bike accident.You know it could have been on a snowboard because that was one of his favorite winter sports. I worried about him so much on a snowboard. Yet,I worried about him on everything he did, he was always pushing himself over the edge. As I was reading one of the entries someone wrote it said ...."You lived Karine most of us simply exist" This is so true of my son Cody. He was into everything testing out his limits and living with no fear. He was so young and so invincible. Somehow I feel Karine and Cody maybe together, just on another level. Two of the same energizes,safely and totally enjoying there sports and themselves in the next life. My heart bleeds and beats with yours. May you all be in a good place with Karine's early death. May you all be able to live without Karine in this earthly life. Affectionally, Debbe Nelson

When tragedy strikes and takes the life of our loved ones, many cry out with great sorrow. Your tears are not unnoticed by Our Heavenly Father. Although your deep pain will not easily disappear, prayer to God will bring comfort to you as you grieve. The Bible assures us God "is healing the broken hearted ones, and is binding up their painful spot." Please accept my deepest sympathy.

We are sorry for your loss; Karine now stands beside our Lord, completely understanding all His mysterious ways. We hope this poem helps to ease your grief.
"In Loving Memory:
Home At Last!
I’m home at last my loved ones,
With my Father in the sky;
He called my name so sweetly,
He called me home on high.
My time on earth was precious,
Truly blessed with all your love;
Those times are now your memories,
As I watch you from above.
No longer do I walk in pain,
Or feel such agony;
My weakness has become my strength,
Home at last, I’m finally free.
I’ve served my time and paid my dues,
According to Gods plan;
Eternal peace He's granted me,
Now I’m sitting at Gods right hand.
Don't cry for me in sorrow,
For my life is better now;
My frail body has been restored,
I’m riding on the clouds.
You're always in my heart,
With good times that have passed;
But praise the Lord in Heaven,
I’m finally home at last!"
