Sister Dorothy Anne Flood

Dorothy Flood Obituary

Flood, Sister Dorothy Anne CSJ LATHAM Sister Dorothy Anne Flood, CSJ (Sister Anne Robert), 81, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany. Sister Dorothy had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 64 years. Sister Dorothy was born in Syracuse on April 12, 1926, daughter of the late Charles and Marion Edgeworth Flood. After graduating from St. Vincent de Paul High School and attending Powelson Business Institute, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1944. Sister Dorothy received a bachelor's degree in music from The College of Saint Rose, a master's degree in music from Boston University and a doctorate in music education from Columbia University. In addition, she pursued post-graduate studies at Ohio State University, focusing on music in medieval life and culture. For 12 years, Sister Dorothy taught music in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses and was one of the first Sisters of St. Joseph to go to Fort Edward where she taught piano and worked in religious education. In 1958, she began a 38-year career in the music department of The College of Saint Rose, beginning as a piano instructor, moving to professor of music and serving as department chairperson. In 1994, Sister Dorothy was part of Sisters in Song, a national choir of Catholic sisters who made several recordings in Anaheim, Calif. Sister Dorothy possessed an enthusiastic and impassioned commitment both to her music and to her students. She was gifted with the ability to help students get to the core of a piece of music and find the best mechanism to make that piece come to life. In addition, Sister Dorothy was an extraordinary storyteller with a humorous anecdote for every occasion. Sister Dorothy was devoted to her faith, her family, her friends and her religious community, and her energetic presence will be missed by many. Sister Dorothy is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families, with special mention of Mary, Leo and Olivia Wong whose devotion was such a comfort; by many friends, including her dear friend, Sister Mary Anne Nelson; and by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Dorothy was predeceased by her brother, Rev. Robert Flood, CSB; by her sister, Eleanor Murphy; and by many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Dorothy's funeral Liturgy will be held Monday, April 7, at 10:30 a.m. from the chapel of St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham. Interment will be in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, April 6 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Provincial House with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Contributions in Sister Dorothy's memory may be made to the Development Office of the Sisters of St. Joseph, 385 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Latham, NY 12110. Olivia, Mary and Leo Wong:

Please accept my condolences for the loss of your Aunt, Sister Dorothy. A wonderfully talented and Godly woman who will be missed by all who were blessed to have met her.

Your feelings of loss must be enormous and overwhelming. May your period/s of bereavement and grief be, mercifully, short.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

May you rest in God's eternal peace, Sister Dorothy. We will remember your kindness at the Pyramid Life Center when you helped with music at our 40th wedding anniversary.

Hi, Dot!

Now you are your new self! I’m sure you must like it. Are you called Dot, or Dorth, or Dorothy, or some other name that God called you before you were born?

Please say hello to our friends — Bob, Eleanor, Louis, Aunt Helen, and my family — Janice, Harry (and Uncle Harry and Auntie Nee Chang, and Uncle Tin, and all other uncles and aunties, and Ah Kungs and Ah Pos). Is Hindemith there? Is Beethoven still decomposing?

Love to Sister Bridget and CSJs who went ahead of you. See you in eternity. Please pray that I be more on earth as you are in heaven.

Aloha,
Leo

I was very sad to hear of the passing of Sister Dorothy. She was my piano teacher, thesis advisor, professor, and friend for many years. Sister Dorothy really cared about her students and made each feel special. I also loved to hear all of her stories. She was such a special person and will be missed.
