Ryan Mastin Obituary

Mastin, Ryan M. HOLIDAY, Fla. Ryan Matthew Mastin, 29, of Allandale Dr., Holiday, passed away suddenly June 14, 2008 at his residence. Ryan always had a heart of gold and would give away anything he owned to help another person. As a teenager, Ryan was hit by a car and injured very badly, but was still able to maintain a positive attitude and while incapacitated was proud to have earned his G.E.D. Rye had a very hard life having lost his uncle at a very young age, then his grandma and then his Poppy who he adored. He and his "Poppy" were big sports fans and they lived together enjoying any and all games on T.V. When his "Poppy" passed away, Rye met Gina and together they adopted Jay, both of which were the love of his life. Here he had a new beginning as a happy family. After a while, Gina left and Jay was taken out of their home and Ryan started to withdraw into a deep depression. This experience led to pills and alcohol abuse. We will all miss Ryan and hope that this experience will enlighten others to be aware of the heartbreak of addictions. Left to cherish his memory are his father, Michael Mastin and his stepmother, Donna VanWormer Mastin; his mother, Lois Collins Porter and his stepfather Paul Porter. He is also survived by a sister, Sarah Porter and a brother, Martin Touhey; 12 aunts and uncles; and 13 cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Saturday morning at 9:30 at the Church of St. Mary, 163 Columbia Tpk., Clinton Heights where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated. Friends may call at the church Friday 4-7 p.m. The family would prefer that those who wish make contributions in Ryan's memory to the Church of St. Mary.

I am vey sorry to hear about Ryan, I lost touch with him almost two years ago, and I just so happened to be reading the obits the day it was in the paper. I couldn't believe it. Ryan reached out to me after he got out of the Harbor. I spent a lot of time with him, trying to distract him and trying to get him away from drinking. We would watch movies, hockey, go to the park, take walks, he was really trying. I know he was in a lot of pain, at night he would shake so bad from not drinking, I didn't know what to do but talk to him, and it really hurt me seeing him like that. Something happened for us to not talk anymore, he started drinking a lot more, and I told him I would not watch him to that to himself. I am very sorry for your loss. Ryan was an amazing friend, he will be missed.

I knew Ryan pretty well from Columbia. I hadn't thought of him untill I heard of his passing. The mention of his leg injury really brought me back. To me that defined him as a person....He spent all of that year on crutches, but never seemed to let it get him down. I remeber asking him about it and thinking back I'm shocked because he seemed to hold no ill will about the incident. From that, I can only imagine the kind of person he grew into . You are missed Ryan.

I can't imagine losing one of my sons. My heart and prayers go out to you and your family. I can relate to Ryan's death because my brother died from alcohol addiction last year. I feel that we're left here to spread the message of how bad addictions can be for them and especially for their loved ones that are left behind. I know I will always feel guilt, wondering if there was just one thing that I could have done to help him to stay away from alcohol. As hard as it is now, you will come through this dark time in your life. My prayers are with the family. Just remember his suffering is over now and he is at peace.

I'm sorry for the loss of your son,Jay.
I believe the Lord wants us to finish out our journey on this earth for his purpose, but sometimes the pain of this world becomes to much to bear and God allows us to go home. Rest in knowing that God comforts the brokenhearted. May Jay's spirit be at peace. 1Thess.4:13,14

As the wife of an addict(clean 10 months) I have often feared it would be his obituary that I would be reading in the paper. Your painful loss and your words to help others in his obituary was touching and obviously heartfelt. I hope it will help to save another although your Ryan is gone now. I am very sorry for your loss and want everyone to know that addiction can happen to anyone and can claim even the most innocent of lives. Again, I am sorry for your loss.

Dear Mastin Family:
I am so sorry for your loss. He sounded like a wonderful, warm young man and that anyone who met him came away a better person from that interaction. My husband passed away at the age of 28 from the same circumstances. I know how hard it was for his parents and siblings. Please just lean on and love one another. May your wonderful memories of Ryan sustain you and knowing that he is at peace help you during this difficult time.

God bless you all

Ryan~
"Love is stronger then death even though it can't stop death from happening, but no matter how hard death tries it can't separate people from love. It can't take away our memories either. In the end, life is stronger than death."
Ryan, you were loved by many and we are all blessed with many memories of you, which will always keep you alive in our hearts. I know you are up there looking down at us, playing cards and talking about baseball with Grandma & Grandpa M. Memories now will bring tears, but in time will bring smiles and laughs. God Bless, you will always be loved and missed by us.
Love, Jeanne, Cousins- Dan, Jeff, Matt & Mark
