Edmund McDonald Obituary

McDonald, Edmund R. ALBANY Edmund R. McDonald, 82, passed away on August 8, 2008 at St. Peter's Hospital. Born in Albany, N.Y. on December 31, 1925, he was the son of the late Patrick J. and Eleanor Mary (Hay) McDonald. He attended St. Mary's School and Vincentian Institute. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. Ed worked for the A& P Bakery for 19 years and Nabisco for 24 years, retiring in 1990. He married Anna Mae Hughes in 1946 and they had 61 wonderful, loving years together. He was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church where he served as an usher for many years. He was a member of the Colonie Elks. Ed was a game show enthusiast specifically enjoying The Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune, and was especially adept at solving the puzzles. He was an avid sports fan and a great coach to young children. He served as a manager and the player agent at Arbor Hill Little League in the late 1950s and 1960s, where he introduced the rule that every child had to play at least two innings in every game. This rule was later adopted by all the Little Leagues throughout the city of Albany. He coached the youngest players so he could teach them the values of fair play, teamwork, and sportsmanship early in their lives. In addition to his beloved wife, Anna Mae (Ann); he was the loving father of Michael E (Diana) McDonald of Guilderland, Dennis P (Jeanne) McDonald of Clifton Park, Sharon (Kenneth) Leonard of Niskayuna; predeceased by his son, Edmund J (Buzzy) McDonald; grandfather of Lauren (Scott) Trembley of Colonie, Christine McDonald of East Greenbush, Jason McDonald of Colonie, James Simpkins of Mariaville, Daniel Leonard of Niskayuna, and Marissa and Carle McDonald of Guilderland; great-grandfather of Abigail and Logan Trembley of Colonie. He was the brother of John McDonald of Colonie, Mary Eleanor (Tusie) of Clifton Park, Jean Reilly of Albany; predeceased by siblings, James McDonald, Kathryn (Weenie) DeFilipo, Robert McDonald, and Patricia Perez; brother-in-law of Raymond and Dee Hughes, Kathryn and Arthur Thomas, and James and Avis Hughes; many nieces and nephews survive him. The family extends its heartfelt appreciation to the staff of St. Peter's Hospital for their care and dedication during Ed's brief illness. Funeral services Monday at 10:00 a.m. from the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany thence to Blessed Sacrament Church, Albany at 10:30 a.m. where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Sunday, 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow the Mass in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Ed's memory be made to Blessed Sacrament Church, 607 Central Ave., Albany, NY 12206.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived
okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here
is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you
every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up
and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were
gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.

There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for
me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's
chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life
on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not
be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But
one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a
time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will
give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day
was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the
way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick
him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in
your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember
you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
