Charles Fitch Obituary

Fitch, Charles R. TROY Charles R. Fitch, 95, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, August 9, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital with his loving family at his side following a brief illness. A longtime Troy resident, Charles was born on April 25, 1913 in Rouses Point, N.Y. the son of the late Charles S. and Theresa Ryan Fitch. He spent his childhood in Rouses Point and graduated from Rouses Point High School. He proudly served his country during World War II as a sergeant in the U. S. Army. Upon his return, he took employment in the railroad industry for the Railway Express Agency and retired as a supervisor many years ago. Charles was the beloved husband for 58 years of Margaret Kane Fitch, with whom he raised a family. As an accomplished handyman, Charles had a tool for everything and was able to fix and repair almost anything. He was also noted for his great cooking skills which he learned as a young man in his mother's restaurant in Rouses Point. He was a member of the American Legion of Troy and The Troy Lodge, #141 of the BPOE. He was a dedicated communicant of St. Paul the Apostle Church, and member of the Knights of Columbus. Most of all, he was a great husband, wonderful father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many and will be greatly missed. Survivors, in addition to his wife include his devoted children, Patricia (Dr. Dennis) Hiller of Jackson, N.H. and Michael Fitch of Troy; his cherished grandchildren, Dr. Bryan (Lyndsay), Matthew, Kate and Alli Hiller, and great-grandson, Brayden Hiller. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Charles was predeceased by his siblings, Marjorie, Mariah, Naomi, Frances and Constance. The family wishes to thank the staff of the fifth floor at St. Mary's Hospital for the care and compassion shown to Charles during his stay. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 12 at 9:30 a.m. by Rev. William A. Gorman, Pastor at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Troy. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited and may call on Monday from 4-7 p.m. at the Doran Funeral Home, 9 So. Lake Avenue, Troy. Memorial contributions would be appreciated to Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144.
