Florence Duffy Obituary

Duffy, Florence "Mimi" ALBANY Florence "Mimi" Duffy, 85, passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2008 after a brief illness at St. Peter's Hospice Inn. She was born in Albany and was the daughter of the late Lillian and Harry Duffy. Mimi worked for the Department of Social Services and retired in 1984. She was predeceased by her beloved brother Jackie and her older sister Ruth "Ruthie" Miralles, who she loved and shared a home with for 50 years. She was also predeceased by her younger sister Evelyn "Babe" Sullivan. Babe died so young that her youngest daughter, Melissa, was only 8 years old. Mimi helped to raise Melissa and always loved her like a daughter. Ruthie, Mimi and Babe were loving and loyal to each other all their lives. Mimi is survived by her nieces, Melissa Carrow, Sharon Mason and Deborah Porter, her caretaker for more than 15 years; her great-nieces and nephews, Brittany Carrow, Caitlin Carrow, Amy Hochmuth, Bridy Lucas, Tara Scaccia, Tracy Martone, Jimmy Porter and Shaun Porter. Mimi was one of a kind! Despite her small stature, Mimi was a strong woman. She survived being hit by a Jeep Wagoneer in 1989 and loved telling everyone about the metal rods and screws that kept her knees working after the accident. Mimi was even written about in medical journals for her progress in rehab strength training. Mimi enjoyed drawing, aerobics, swimming, runway modeling and watching the Young and the Restless. Mimi was most famous for the only thing she could make - scrambled eggs. Mimi LOVED sweets, especially, fresh baby powdered doughnuts, Hostess cupcakes, Drakes coffee cakes, baby cones from Tastee Freeze the Ruthie's rice pudding. Although Mimi was a little princess who liked things just-so, she was adored by all who loved her. The funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the New Comer-Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155 south of Central Ave.). Calling hours will precede the service from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mimi's name to the American Parkinson Disease Association, 135 Parkinson Ave., Staten Island, NY 10305. To Mrs. Porter, Jimmy, Tracy and Shaun, on behalf of the McGarry Family, we send you our most sincere condolences in this difficult time. I will miss Mimi very very much. What I will miss most of all are those laughs that she provided on 9 View Ave when she would suddenly appear in the kitchen hunting down those crumb cakes she loved! I feel very privilidged to have served your family in the final days with any support I may have provided. I wish you the best in this challenging time.

Ms. Porter, Shaun, Jim, Tracy,

I'm so sorry for your loss. Mimi was such a nice person and everybody I'm sure has heard the stories from when Shaun and I were younger that I'm sure made her laugh. I just hope I made her laugh like she made me laugh with her funny comments towards me. I miss those days, I think of them all the time.
Love Ya Guys :)

Melissa and family,
My deepest sympathy to all of you. Mimi was one of the most wonderful women I have had the pleasure of meeting and I am quite certain that she will be missed by many, myself included. She took care of me, along with you Missy, when we were young and I will not forget how kind and caring she was....nor will I forget the trips to the Tastee Freeze! You feel blessed, I am sure, to have had her in you life. I do as well. May you find comfort in the knowledge that she touched so many lives and will forever be remembered. My heart goes out to all of you.
