Carl Smith Obituary

Smith, Carl D. Sr. SOUTH WESTERLO, N.Y. Carl D. Smith Sr., 78, of South Westerlo, passed away at the St. Peter's Hospice Inn in Albany, N.Y. on September 26, 2008. He was born in Medusa, N.Y. on March 10, 1930, son of the late Delos and Mamie (Edwards) Smith. Carl served his country in the U.S. Army with A-Battery in the 38th Field Artillery during the Korean Conflict; receiving the Korean Service Medal w/3 Bronze Service Stars. He retired from the Albany County Highway Department, having worked in the Voorheesville section as a stores clerk. Carl was an active member of the Greenville American Legion Post #291, the Tri-Town Memorial Post #722 V.F.W., the U.S. Korea Foundation, the 2nd Indian Head Div. Also the James Austin Lodge #557 F. & A.M., the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Albany, the Cyprus Shrine in Albany, the Cyprus Motor Patrol, and a 44 year member of the Norton Hill Wildlife Club. He enjoyed bowling, golf and gardening and having a good time with his many friends. He will be missed by his loving family and the many friends that he leaves behind. Surviving are his wife, Gertrude "Trudy" (Elpel) Smith; a son, Carl Smith Jr. "Chip" (Julianne) of Durham, N.Y.; two step-grandchildren, Dylan and Jeremy Weremichick; a brother, Rossie Smith (Shirley) of Greenville, N.Y.; a sister, Marie Losee of Rome, N.Y.; a niece, Linda White and two nephews, Kevin Smith and Gerald Losee; also a stepmother, Gene Smith; and her daughter, Sherri Gray. Relatives and friends may call at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR81, Greenville, N.Y. on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. The James Austin Lodge 7 p.m., Greenville American Legion Post, 7:30 p.m. and the Tri-Town Memorial Post 7:45 p.m. will conduct services at the funeral home. Service and interment will be in the Gerald Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery on Tuesday, September 30 at 11 a.m. Those who desire may contribute in his memory to the Columbia/Greene Community Hospice or to the Westerlo Ambulance Fund.
