William Reedy Obituary

Reedy, William T. Jr. NORWALK, Conn. Dr. William T. (Bill) Reedy Jr., 76, SUNY Albany Professor Emeritus of English history, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2008 in Norwalk, surrounded by the love of his family. Bill was born to Grace (Reedy) Robbins and William T. Reedy Sr. on August 19, 1932 in Reading, Pa. Dr. Reedy, a graduate of Reading, Pa. High School, was a magna cum laude graduate of Yale University class of 1954 and Phi Beta Kappa academic fraternity member. Bill served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1958, graduating from Army Language School. Dr. Reedy received his doctorate in English Medieval History from Johns Hopkins University in 1963. An internationally acclaimed researcher and linguist fluent in many languages, Dr. Reedy taught English history at SUNY Albany for over 30 years. Bill was a member of the Pipe Roll Society, a British organization dedicated to the advancement of the understanding of English Medieval History, the subject of his life's work expressed in his book "Bassett Charters." Bill was an avid opera devotee and member of the Siena Opera Club. Bill was a communicant of the Cathedral of All Saints in Albany. Bill is survived by his mother, Mrs. Grace Robbins, Reading; sister and brother-in-law, Nora and Bill Kulas, Venice, Fla.; sister-in-law, Mrs. Linda Reedy, Reading; nephews and their wives, James T. Reedy Jr. and Kelly Reedy, Franklin, Tenn., Stephen W. Reedy and Adrienne E. Reedy, Wilton, Conn., David and Marie Reedy, Charlotte, N.C.; cousins, Earl and Shirley Mutter; many beloved grand-nephews, a grandniece and friends. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 1 at 3 p.m. at the Cathedral of All Saints in Albany, with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Missions Fund, Cathedral of All Saints, 68 South Swan St., Albany, NY 12210.

Bill was a classmate at Yale. It was a pleasure to see him at our 50th reunion in 2004. Best wishes to his family and I will hold him in the light.
