Dr. John Rhodes Scott

John Scott Obituary

Scott, Dr. John Rhodes DELMAR John Rhodes Scott, physician dedicated to improving the health of children, died Monday, February 12, 2007 at 68. Dr. John Scott was born in Peking, China, the son of missionaries Francis and Helen Scott. A graduate of the University of Penn-sylvania Medical School and Davidson College, he had retired from the practice of pediatric radiology. During his 25 years on the staff of the Albany Medical Center, he contributed immeasurably to improving the health of thousands of infants and young children. He passed away Monday after a courageous four-year fight against lymphoma and melanoma. Dr. Scott loved outdoor activities, a passion he shared and participated in with his two sons. He was a member of the RPI Model Railroad Club and greatly enjoyed constructing buildings and structures to be used in the elaborate RPI model railroad. He deservedly took pride in the beautiful private Japanese garden he created. Dr. Scott is survived by his beloved wife, Gail; devoted sons, Tim and Ted; his loving stepchildren, Amy Scarlett and Jody Mills; his siblings, Ted, Howard and Marianne Scott Pitner; three grandchildren; and former wife, Julie. His love, care and support for his family was always deeply felt. His family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to his physicians, Drs. Alan Rauch, Susan Weaver and Jedd Wolchuk. A memorial service and reception will be held Saturday, February 17 at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Albany, with Rev. Dr. Miriam Leupold and Rev. Glenn Leupold officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Fund, PO Box 27106, New York, NY 10087-7106 or First Presbyterian Church, 362 State St., Albany, NY 12210.

Dear Scott Family,
I worked in Pediatric Radiology in the mid 1970's with Dr. Scott. Although I only worked with him for a short time I quickly learned that he was a wonderful person, a nice man and great to be around. He will be sorely missed by so many. You are all in my prayers.

John was a gracious, complimentary, gentle man who savored the beauty of his garden, the words from a Bill Peet book which he gave our daughters, the mystery of a flower or insect, the taste of a single grain of rice or the freshest fish from the Swan vendor, the excitement of a special dessert, the dignity of the physician, the words of a prayer, the fascination of postcards from our departed daughter, the kindness and love of his wife Gail, the pride in his family, the melody in a piece played by a chamber group at Union College...the knowledge that peace comes to all in God's welcoming arms.

Dr. Scott always inspired a sense of hope and joy for life, even during his more difficult times. We were always happy to share with him his love of trains and model railroading. To us he was never a customer, he was a friend. He will be missed by many.

Dear Scott Family,
I was saddened to read of Dr. Scott's passing.
As a former Pediatric Nurse at Albany Medical Center, I had the privilege and honor of working with Dr. Scott. He was a kind and gentle man always doing what was best for the young patients whose "pictures' were his responsibility.
My thoughts and prayer are with you at this time.
