Olga Sicko Obituary

Sicko, Olga WATERVLIET Olga Sicko, 87, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, December l, 2007 at the Springs Nursing Care Facility in Troy surrounded by her loving family following a long illness. Born in Maplewood, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Mary Proc Opalka and the beloved wife of John Sicko, who prede-ceased her in 1963. A lifelong area resident, she was educated in Watervliet and faced the challenge of raising a family by herself after her husband's death. She was a loving, devoted mother and grandmother and worked very hard to be a homemaker as well as a having a career as an office assistant at Times-Mirror Publishing. She was a devout and dedicated parishioner of St. Nicholas' Ukrainian Church in Watervliet and participated in many activities there. Olga loved her church and enjoyed the annual pierogi sales and was happy to cook them for the benefit. She was a dedicated member of the Our Mother of Perpetual Help Society at the church. She was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed by all. Survivors include her cherished and devoted children, Diane M. Sicko of Rensselaer, Richard T. (Stacey) Sicko of Berlin; her grandchildren, Jessica and Adam Sicko and John Hendricks II; her siblings, Mary Valastro of Watervliet, and Michael Opalka of Cohoes; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband John, Olga was preceded in death by her treasured son, John D. Sicko in 2000, and her siblings, Andrew and Libby Opalka and Eva Farron. The family would like to extend special thanks the staff of the Springs Nursing Center in Troy for the care and compassion extended to Olga during her stay there. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at Parker Bros. Memorial Funeral Home, 2013 Broadway, and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas' Church, Watervliet. Interment will follow in St. Nicholas' Cemetery in Colonie. Friends are invited and may call on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. A Parastas service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Memorial contributions would be appreciated by the family to St. Nicholas Church Restoration Fund, 2410 Fourth Ave., Watervliet, NY 12189. We were so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. Howard, I and our kids remember your Mom with fond memories. She was always a joy to be around. Loved her very much. Dyken Pond was always time for us to get to visit with her and you both. Her best friend Jennie Wahl loved her so much. I always was so happy that your Mom was also such a great joy to my Mom. My thoughts and prayers are with the Sicko family. Olga was so great to me for many many years. From the time I was a little girl, Olga always remembered my birthday (I am now 34 years old)....I always looked forward to her birthday card in the mail thinking as years passed she would forget me, but she never did!
