Charles Newland Obituary

Newland, Charles E. SLINGERLANDS Charles E. Newland, 84, of Slingerlands, died on Monday, February 8, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospital, Rapid City, S.D. Chuck was born in Cohoes on November 21, 1925, the son of the late Edgar and Mae (Slater) Newland. A U.S. Army veteran, he honorably served his country during World War II as a paratrooper in the 13th airborne. A Union College graduate, with post-graduate studies at Cornell University, he enjoyed a distinguished career as a mortgage banking executive at Equitable Life and (his favorite) commissioner of Economic Development involved in the restoration of downtown Albany. After his retirement, he became a master gardener, photographer, and boat builder. Chuck was an outdoorsman who enjoyed canoeing and kayaking. Up until his last year, he enjoyed canoeing with people half his age. He will be remembered for his fantastic wry sense of humor and clever puns. Chuck was loved as a husband, father, friend and neighbor and will be dearly missed. Chuck was predeceased by his wife, Alyce M. Newland, on August 27, 2005. He is survived by his son, Scott B. Newland and his wife Joanne of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; his step-grandson, Adam Caldwell and his wife Danna Caldwell of Los Angeles, Calif.; and special friend, Joan Beaulieu of Rapid City, S.D. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Avenue, Delmar on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. A service will follow at 12 noon Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd., Albany, NY 12211.

I have thought about Chuck so many times over these years since I first met him as we prepared for the first Great Hudson River Paddle. I marveled at his very meticulous, expert boat building. Having Chuck join us on the very first paddle down the Hudson, those nine days from Albany to NYC, made the trip memorable and so enjoyable as he got along with everyone and always had a great story to tell. People should know it was Chuck and his canoe that convinced Govenor Pataki to go against his handler's wishes and take off his socks to join Chuck for a short distance to kick off the first GHRP. "How can I not!" The govenor said as he looked down at Chuck's beautiful canoe! The picture of them paddling down is memorialized on the cover of Wooden Boat....Chuck always had a gentleness about him but a keen interest in people and the river. I will always remember being inspired by him, his energy, grace and humor.
I wish I had seen more of him in the past few years.

Chuck Newland, what a dear man. I met and quickly learned to adore Chuck on the Great Hudson River Paddle (both I and II). He was kind, generous, intelligent, a family man and had a twinkle in his eye for adventure. Chuck was not one to brag or boast and yet when you pulled his life stories out of him they were fascinating to hear. Paratrooping, meeting his true love Alyce, serving on the Mayor's staff to acquire funds to revitalize downtown Albany- these stories were all jewels.

I am responsible for a scratch on one of his beautifully built boats. Before I could finish apologizing Chuck smiled and said, non to worry, the boats were built to be used not to sit around as furniture.

Chuck, what a wonderful life and thank you for touching mine. To me, your name invokes warmth and fondness for the kind hearted Renaissance man that you were.

Here's to quite waters and a tailwind,
