Rainy Clarke Obituary

CLARKE During her 90 years, Rainy Clarke enjoyed a full and complete life that left little time for dawdling. There were children to be raised and a family to be run. There were Camp Fire Girls to be inspired, songs to be shared around the family piano, meals to be prepared. She was a Cub Scout den mother, a school volunteer, a cupcake maker and pizza chef. If something involving her children -- sons Chris and Ken, daughter Judy -- needed to be done, Rainy made sure the task was completed. She wasn't simply a wife and mother, she was the unquestioned commander in chief of a family of five. Her perseverance was amazing to behold. No obstacle was too difficult, no challenge too daunting. "When one door closes, another opens," she liked to say. It was her husband, Dan, who brought home the paycheck as a guidance counselor at Englewood High School. But Rainy was the chief financial officer who decided how every penny was to be spent. Dan joked that she squeezed a dollar hard enough to make Martha Washington jealous! Beyond her family, Rainy's great loves were music and nature. At 19, the Jacksonville native was a professional singer, crooning the blues in the late 1930s with the local Johnny Entenza Band. By 21, however, she had married Daniel Clarke and divorced the world of professional music. She and Dan had met a couple of years earlier when one of his brothers answered a knock on the Clarke family's front door. Rainy was collecting subscription fees for her Florida Times-Union route. "Hey," his brother Cecil exclaimed over his shoulder, "the paper boy's a girl!" As her children grew, Rainy instilled in them a love of nature. Nothing was more glorious to Rainy than simply being outdoors. A walk through the woods with her was an experience like no other: No plant, no tree, no bird was a stranger. Rainy knew their habits, their likes and dislikes. Always she was active. She doted over the plants and trees in her large yard. The songbirds loved her, and flocked to her feeders, rewarding Rainy with glimpses of their beauty. Until the final three years of her life, Rainy walked two miles a day. Two deaths affected her deeply: She lost her husband Dan in 1986 to a heart attack. Her daughter Judy was taken by breast cancer in 2006. She is survived by two sons, Chris, Santa Rosa, Calif.; and Ken, Orlando; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; sister, Katherine Gallagher, Liberty, S.C.; and brother, Webster Marlowe, Palatka. A memorial service will be held at noon, Saturday, Dec. 6, at Northeast Florida Community Hospice, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville. Arrangements under the direction & care of ETERNITY FUNERAL HOME. Clarke Family,
Rainy was this wonderful woman that lived down the street in the Pleasant Point area from my Grandmother Ruby Bishop. My Grandmother and Rainy were fast friends for many years until illness separated them in the mid 1980's. On her deathbed my Grandmother mentioned her friendship with Rainy Clarke as being some of the most wonderful moments of her life. Thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of loss. I am confident that Rainy is in heaven right now and she is busy. God Bless you!

Aren't they cute? Rainy and Dan around the time of their marriage in March 1939. She is 20, he is 22.

Rainy adored Ken's wife, Susan, and for Susan the feeling was mutual. Rainy was heartbroken in 2006 when Susan died suddenly.

I am an original Yenis group Camp Fire Girl. The group went through many hard times but we stayed together from 5th grade until high school graduation. Always present was Rainy Clarke. She inspired, guided, scolded and taught us about life. What our own mothers were too embarrassed to discuss with us Rainy would. She brought in guest speakers to answer all our questions from sex to make-up. I am privileged to have known and loved her for 55 years. My fondest memory currently is how she took those of us who could make it to a celebration of her ninetyth birthday around to all the people at the assisted care center and introduced us - 64 year old grandmas- as "her girls." I will always remember her.

I can't remember a time when Mrs. Clark was not in my life. I joined Blue Birds when I was 8 and had just moved to Jacksonville. At that time my mom and Mrs. Clark were both volunteers in Camp Fire Girls and became friends and neighbors, as we lived several blocks away. I was always in and out of her house and remember Mr. and Mrs. Clark fondly. I learned a lot about nature and to appreciate a slow walk through the woods, the gentle sounds of nature, and a good laugh. Many happy times were had around a camp fire roasting marshmallows. Even in the past few years she and mom have remained in touch, both being in assisted living facilities. Thanks for all the great times Mrs. Clark, you will always be a part of my most fond memories.

Ken and Chris,
What a wonderful tribute and celebration of your mother's life. She was a very special lady. Ken, you captured the very essence of who Aunt Rainy was in a few paragraphs. I loved her and will miss her very much. I will never forget how good she was to me (and my family) all of my life. She always had a smile and greeted me with "Hi, Darlin'". That will remain with me forever. Love, Linda
