William McCaughey Obituary

William F. McCaughey "Mac" 86, died 13 August 2008 in Miami, FL. Born 1 October 1921 in Park Ridge, Illinois; he was a resident of Tucson from 1947 until 2003, and always considered Tucson his real home. Mac is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Justin Enfinger, of Miami. Preceded in death by beloved wife Margie in 1999, they were together again to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on 14 August. Mac earned a B.S. in Chemistry in 1942 from Purdue University in Indiana; a M.S. in Biochemistry in 1947 from Northwestern University in Illinois; and a Ph.D. in Agricultural Chemistry in 1951 from the University of Arizona. He met the love of his life, Margie Buntain, as an undergrad at Purdue, and married her on 14 August 1943, at Ft. Ord, California, before shipping out as a young 2LT in the Field Artillery for active duty in the South Pacific during the final years of WWII. That was the beginning of a distinguished 31-year career with the US Army Reserve, from which Mac retired on 1 September 1974, with the rank of Colonel. After completing his M.S., Mac took off in search of postgraduate work in warmer climes. His train to Los Angeles had a long stop in Tucson, where he took the opportunity to explore the U of A. He visited with the faculty of the Ag College, was offered a postgraduate fellowship on the spot, and decided to stay. Margie joined him a few months later, and together they began a lifelong association with the university that was as much their home as the house they lived in for over 50 years. Mac joined the faculty in 1951, teaching Biochemistry and later, Nutritional Science, to an estimated 25,000 students over the course of his career. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1994, but continued to teach part-time as long as his health allowed. Mac lived life to the fullest, and had many interests. He was a ham radio operator, call sign K7CET, who played a major role in the development of Tucson and Pima County's emergency preparedness plan. From the late 1950's through the 1980's, Mac actively participated in Civil Defense, Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (R.A.C.E.S.), and the volunteer search and rescue organization Pima County Search and Rescue, all of which allowed him to combine his love of ham radio with the leadership skills honed during his years in the Army. He was a member of the Tucson-Pima County Emergency Services Commission from 1964 through 1988, serving as Chairman for six of those years. Mac was a founding member and league secretary (for too many years to count!) of the U of A Faculty/Staff Bowling League, which continues today. He shared his love of bowling with Margie, also a founding member of the league, and Lisa, who bowled with her parents for many years. Mac also enjoyed making trips to Las Vegas with his family, but usually left the place a little greener! He moved to Miami in November 2003, to be with Lisa after she moved there to marry her childhood sweetheart. Although his declining health did not allow him to be as active as in the past, Mac had five great years in Miami. He took great delight in beating Lisa regularly at their beloved game of Cribbage, looked forward to the birthday and holiday meals she always prepared for him, and loved receiving cards, letters and phone calls from friends in Tucson. Besides his family, Mac leaves behind countless friends, colleagues, and former students whose lives were enriched by knowing him. Lisa and Justin thank the staffs of Jackson South Community Hospital and Catholic Hospice in Miami for the exceptional patient care and emotional support they provided during Mac's final days. They extend special thanks to La Familia Angel of Deerwood Manor for the love and outstanding care they gave Mac during the five years he lived with them; they were truly "his angels!" A memorial service will be held in celebration of Mac's life on Friday, September 19, 2008 at 7:00 P.M. at ADAIR FUNERAL HOME-DODGE CHAPEL, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd, at Speedway. The interment service, with military honor guard, will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. at Holy Hope Cemetery mausoleum, 3555 N. Oracle Rd, at Prince. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either The McCaughey Student Endowment or The Wolfe/McCaughey Nutritional Science Endowment, care of the UA Foundation, PO Box 210109, Tucson AZ 85721-0109. Please join Mac's family in celebrating and honoring his memory, and help them let him know how greatly he is missed.

Dear Lisa,
"Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for awhile and leave footprints on our heart and we are never, ever the same" - Anon.
It was my good fortune in life to have had the opportunity to be a Nutritional Sciences Department student and colleague of your father, Mack. He truly was a remarkable teacher and professional who "helped light many candles" that illuminated the path for the lives of people and created many lasting footprints. Participating in his memorial service brought back wonderful memories. His legacy will live on. I am pleased to make a contribution to the Wolfe/McCaughey Nutritional Sciences Department Endowment in honor of Mack.
My condolences go out to you and your family.
Sincerely,

Jill Egger

I knew Margie first and then met Mack through the U of A Faculty/Staff bowling league. He was one of those people who you meant once and they were your friends. He will be missed. My sympathy to Lisa and her family.

Lisa,
My husband and I were both students of your father back in the late 1970's; I took Nutritional Biochem and my husband took Ag Biochem. We came to his memorial service and enjoyed learning even more about his full and wonderful life. The previous guest book entries are right on the money about Dr. McCaughey's excellent teaching methods and true concern for his students. I most remember him telling us about how bad trans fats were - this was almost 30 years before the American public became concerned - all because of his great understanding of Biochemistry! It had a big impression on me so I was not surprised when trans fats were finally banned. You can be very proud that your dad was such a great teacher and human being!!

Lisa: I was sorry to hear about your Dad. I was both a student and employee of your father's in the late 80s/early 90s. I have fond memories of his biochem class..I still have the book and some of the notes. He was an amazing teacher. I worked as his teaching assistant for the freshman class. His office was always a mess, but he knew where everything was; he kept scotch the desk drawer "for those bad days;" I remember him smoking cigars in the office..and when someone would complain, he would tell them to talk to the building manager...he was the building manager! He talked to me once about the War and told me that "little decisions can mean a lot." Once a student remarked that she saw Mac and Margie together & commented "I hope my husband looks at me that way after 40 years!" I last saw your Dad at the CoCos restaurant after the homecoming game in about 2003...I had the chance to tell him what a difference he made in my life. I will miss him but I know he's happy being with your Mom. He had a great sense of humor and a sharp mind..and I still laugh at some of his jokes.. Martina (Tina) Cartwright, PhD, RD UA alum

Mac was the man who taught me morse code and radio theory back in 1959 -60. He became a close friend of my Father, Cecil Buchanan K7KZE and Uncle, John Buchanan K7CRO and a major role model to me. I listened in awe to his stories of his service in WWII. I can still see him scooting around town in his Triumph TR 3 and his ever present smile.

Dr. McCaughey was truly a role model. I had taken his nutritional biochemistry back in 1984 and his skills as a lecturer were very much appreciated. He always made time for his students and was so eager to hear the success stories of his students.

The three memories that I will always carry of him are his love and use of complex overhead projector overlays to simplify complex biochemical processes, his motorcycle that he seemed to ride everywhere, and that I met my soul mate and wife of 19 years in his biochemistry class.

Lisa and Justin,
In 1978, I took my first biochemistry class from Dr. Mac and will always remember him as a student's professor. He was very dedicated to his students - always there to help. He was also a great joy to work with and had a wonderful sense of humor.

Please accept my family's consolenses at this difficult time.

I'd like to thank, in advance, everyone who visits my dad's guest book. This is a great way to keep his memory alive. I want to invite all visitors to check out my personal website at www.lisaenfinger.com. I've posted a special page devoted to my dad there, and I'll be adding photos and other items over the next few weeks. My dad was a very special man, and we had a very loving relationship right to the last minute. I told him many times, "If I'd had all the dads in the world to choose from, I couldn't have done any better!" I miss him very, very much, but the condolences and anecdotes that are pouring in are comforting and heart-warming. Hope to see all of you in Tucson...let's fill the house!

I knew Mac since 1989 when I started at the University and worked with his wife Margie. Wow what a great example of a wonderful couple. They totally worshiped each other as well as their daughter Lisa. I hope she realizes what wonderful parents she has and can pass on their wonderful words of wisdom to others in their absence I have learned many things from them. I will miss them both dearly but I am joyous in the fact that they are together once more with our Heavenly Father. Gosh I could think what a beautiful reunion that was! Margie was probably the happiest person on heaven the day that Mac came to be with her. God bless and my prayers and thoughts are with Lisa and her husband.
