Christian S. Cotner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 3, 2008.
Christian S. Cotner's brother, Eric, said he and his brother grew up on different sides of issues. "I like the Red Sox. He liked the Yankees. I went to college. He wanted to go in the Marines. I remember the day he said he wanted to be a Marine. Our whole family worried about what would happen to him. But when he graduated, I immediately realized he wanted to be the best. I will always love him and keep him close to my heart." Cotner, 20, of Waterbury, Conn., died May 30 from a non-hostile incident in Al Anbar province. He was a 2006 high school graduate and was assigned to Okinawa, Japan. "I always remember him as being funny. He could always make me laugh. He was just a sweetheart," said Amy Percy, a friend. Cotner didn't like car trips, but lit up at the sight of steam engines. He loved to play video games, and recently sent his friends several hand-held video games from Iraq. He was fearless of heights, loved to bungee jump, ride roller coasters, mess with computers and fly remote-controlled airplanes. He also is survived by his parents, Karen and Graham.

I served with Cpl Cotner in Iraq, he was Com and I was a Cook so I saw him every day, over the time I was with MWSS 172 I came to know Cotner as a hell of Marine and an even better man. I find myself thinking about him and his family around the holidays. I guess I just want to say to his family that they had an out standing Marine but even more important a son that they should be PROUD of. Semper Fi Brother, gone be NEVER forgotten

To the family of Christian, I severed with your son: from the Philippines to Japan and Iraq. The last weekend before we left for Iraq bunch of us spent the weekend at okuma resort. It was a fun filled weekend. It was rainy, but somehow he always made things a fun, it was just him he could make the best out of the worst. As I think back about him all I can think is that he was a warm hearted man, and one hell of a good friend, the type a man that would give you the jacket of his back, and lend you his last 5 dollars to get a haircut so you would not get in trouble. To his family I am sorry for your loss, because I know how much it hurt me I can only say thanks for allowing me to be part of his life, and you guys did a very good job on raising such a profound man.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

To the family and parents of Christian I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to be with you and heal you.

Dear Marine Family,
As a mother of a Marine in, Christian's MAW group, and Okinawa I feel that I have lost one that belongs somewhat to our family, for our daily prayers are for all of the service men and women but extra prayers go out to our group. Colt says he knew your son and it was a pleasure to know him as well as work in his company. May you have peace that he walks with God and watches over us still just in a better way. Know that our prayers for your
family will always be front and center. God Bless. Rest in peace and fly home, Firebird Corporal Christian Cotner.

Joseph Salvatore

June 17, 2008

My name is SrA Joseph Salvatore. I was a childhood friend of Christian's and hung out with him and his brother (who I went to school with) a lot.

It had been quite a few years since I had last seen him, but I remember the last time I ever saw him alive was when we and a small group of friends were leaving a lazer tag arena in Waterbury, although I had arived there riding with someone else Christian offered to take me back. It was riding shotgun in his car on the way home he told me we got to talking about the military (I was already enlisted by this point) and he told me he was looking to enlist in the Army Guard. I remember telling him it's not something to take lightly but he was not fazed, his conviction to serve his country was as clear as day. It was only through a mutual friend about two years later that I had learned he in fact joined the Marines, that same mutual friend informing me a few days ago about his death.

I know my personal sadness in no way compares to the misery of the family he left in his wake, but finding this board through a Google search for his name and seeing what everyone has written truly shows what kind of an impact this young man had on his immediate community and his country. He will be dearly missed by every individual that knew him, and it is my most deep regret that I did not find out about the scheduled service in time for his funeral.

God has him now, and he will never be forgotten. Rest in peace my old friend, my memories of you will stay with me forever.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

My deepest condolences to Christain's Family and Friends! You are in my prayers and thoughts

Christian,

We have been friends since 6th grade, and I cant believe that you are gone. You have worked hard to get to the Marines and you have made so many people proud of you. I will never forget you, and the great person that you were, and all of the fun times that we shared at school together.
God Bless
Rest In Peace Christian
