Beverly, Vernon and family,
I just learned this week of your mother's passing. I have been so involved in my husband's illness and subsequent death, I wasn't keeping up with outside information. I want to offer you my condolence. She has done much for my family. She was a close friend to my father, Thomas Cox and Mother Gertrude Cox. as well as my daughter, Anne Brooks Hemphill. To the family of Mrs. Viola Canady. I had the pleasure of meeting your mother when I worked for Calvary Episcopal Church in NE Washington. She was a lovely woman who had a wonderful gift that she shared with many. I will always remember her warm smile and loving nature.

Years ago when I was learning and exploring the art of quilting, I read as many books as I could get my hands on. I read about Miss Viola and considered her a quilting matriarch with a tangible mission. Little did I know that I would meet her when she and a group visited my quilt guild some years later. One of the joys of quilting is knowing that each quilter's spirit lives on in the quilts crafted by their beautiful hands. Miss Viola was a unique treasure.

Beverly, Vernon and Family,
My deepest regrets that I was not able to be present today at Aunt Viola's homegoing service. Aunt Viola has always been one of favorites and dearest relatives - there was no other Aunt with whom I shared such a great, natural rapport - I will surely miss our conversations. She was truly a beautiful, dignified, warm and loving woman - an inspiration to me and so many others.
Please know that you all are in my prayers - may you find comfort and strength under God's care.

(Aunt Ma) Godmother Viola was truly a Godmother to many, A wonderful God fearing woman, although she will be missed so much, she leaves her legacy and teaching in each of you, which really did her proud. Continue to hold on to your faith, it will get you through. God Bless and Keep you strong. (DJ)

I met Ms. Viola at a quilt workshop many years ago. She is the reason why I am quilting today. She will truly be miss.

Words cannot express the deep loss we feel. Vi has been such a part of our lives, and we owe her so much. Quilting was her life. She gave her time and energy to teach anyone who wanted to learn the craft.
We extend our prayers and deepest sympathies to her family. We know this time is hard for you all. But her light still shines. She left behind a rich legacy.

Miss Vi was the most giving of teachers and friends, sharing her wonderful knowledge of the beauty of quilting with any and all who cared to learn and embellish their craft. She was truly an historic figure in the arts community in Washington, DC
The Daughters of Dorcas and Sons was the object of her devotion and we will miss her greatly.

My life was made richer because of Viola's warm spirit and her willingnest to share her expert skills and quilting knowledge. I know the pain will eventually go away, but the memories of the good times you had with your grandmother will always be cherish. Just pray for the Lord to help you through this. Vernon and Beverly,
I send my prayers and condolences to you in the loss of your mother, Viola (Aunt Ma). I will truly miss her because she was like family to me. I have known your family ever since I was a little girl growing up on Abbey Place and I remember so many good times with Aunt Ma. Just let me if know you need someone to sing a song. Aunt Ma - what she is affectionately called since I could remember has been a very loving, caring and inspiring icon. Aunt Ma will be missed. I draw my strength from the words in Rev. 21:4 which states in the very near future God promise that death will be no more. Beverly and Vernon you will always be in my prayers.

When I first moved next door to her (Aug 1998) she introduced herself to me and said "I hope you are here to stay" and I told her I was. She was the best neighbor that people wish they had in their lives. I could not have asked for a better neighbor. She would receive all of my packages for me while I was away and let me know she had them. She would tease me and say that Beverly and I received more packages than anyone she has known. I will truly miss her smile and all of our conversations that we shared.
To Beverly & Vernon may God be with you during your time of bereavement.
