Herbert Denver Gill

Herbert Denver Gill, 75, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was born in Washington County to the late Burb and Henrietta Wilkenson Gill. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Ratliffe and a sister, Regina Gentry. He had been a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Abingdon and had retired from Virginia House Furniture. Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Ruby Gill; his daughters, Patricia Gill of Atkins, Debbie Mitchell of Longview, Texas, and Barbara Thompson and husband, Danny, of Rural Retreat; two brothers, Junior Gill and wife, Marlene, of Emory and Kenny Gill of Kingsport, Tenn.; four sisters, Madeline Ryan of Bristol, Tenn., Betty Gentry and husband, Bob, of Banner-Elk, N.C., Maxine Bryant of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Brenda Repass and husband, Benny, of Meadowview; grandchildren Mickey Mitchell and wife, Melissa, Lee Thompson and wife, Tina, Derek Thompson and wife, Leiann, and Judy Walker and husband, Cody; great-grandchildren Michael Thompson, Jalyn Thompson, Kaleigh Thompson and Loghan Thompson; a sister-in-law and special friend, Betty Harris; special friend and neighbor Jordana; and a host of other loving friends and family. A graveside funeral service was held Oct. 12, at Rose Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Trout officiating. The family received friends Saturday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
