Mabel Beatrice Carroll, 92, of Bland, the Crandon community, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville. Funeral service was held Thursday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. at A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Maurer officiating. A graveside service was held Friday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. at the Mechanicsburg Cemetery. She was born Sept. 1, 1916, in Bland County, daughter of the late Arnold Patton and Ida Miller Austin. She was a lifelong member of the Mechanicsville Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Carroll; four sisters, Madeline Burton, Irene Frith, Lelia McPeak and Clara Brookman; and two brothers, Fayette Patton and Wayne Patton. Survivors include several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Memorial donations may be made to the Bland County Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 585, Bland, VA 24315. A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate was in charge of the arrangements.

Mabel was special and certainly one of God's children. Husband, Alfred was also special and he left his wife and earthly home at a very young age. He was Supt. of Sunday School for many years and they always used their car to take others to Church. God needed a special flower for his Garden and He always chooses the best. Mable wrote some poetry, so she will be busy and happy. She certainly walked with God. Condolences to the nieces, nephews and others.
