Joe Grover Dyson, 60, of Marion died on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009 after a long courageous illness. He was the son of the late Clint and Edith Dyson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ed Dyson, as well as a very special father-in-law and mother-in-law, Glen and Georgia Carter, two special sisters-in-law, Lillie Carter and Barbara Ritzo, and two brothers-in-law, Oval Chapman and Alfred Ferguson. He was an Army veteran and served as a military policeman while in the service. He worked 32 years at Johnston Memorial Hospital as a Registered Nurse in the Neonatal and Nursery Department. He was known for his dedication and care of newborns, as well as a great support for the families of the infants he cared for. He was presented with the Humanitarian Award at Johnston Memorial Hospital in 1992. He was most of all a loving and devoted husband and father. Survivors include his wife, Betty Dyson, and son, Christopher Dyson and wife, April, as well as four sisters, Debbie Dyson of Marion, Frances Ferguson of Marion, Faye Chapman of Uniontown, Ohio, and Peggy Stuttaford of Sacramento, Calif.; and many special relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 12, at Seaver-Brown Chapel with his nephew, the Rev. Adrian Witt, and brother-in-law, the Rev. Roger Carter, officiating. Interment followed at the Wassum Cemetery in Atkins, where military rites were conducted by Marion VFW Post 4667. Nephews Adrian Witt, Michael Witt, Mark Witt, and Aron Witt served as pallbearers. The family received friends on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the family at www.seaverbrown.com. My brother Danny Richardson and myself(Joanne Richardson Woods) grew up with Joe and went to school with him. Our cousin Becky Buck of Atkins has a photo of the three od us,Becky,me and Joe in his uniform. I had just recently sent it to her. I had had it for all these years and thought she would like to have it. We are so sorry that we have lost a friend from all those years ago. He was a good person

Joe was the most gentleman i have ever known.. i came to know Joe on March 26 1982 when my son was born and taken to the nic-u at jmh....Joe helped me to understand what was going on with my son and why they were doing this or that to him... He loved music and always had a radio playing.. i would go early in the morning and stay till late at nite and Joe was the same all day long...always happy singing and laughing...He will be missed by all...My thoughts and prayers are with you all in your time of need...Hold fast to God and he will help you get though this...

My love and prayers to Betty, Chris and family. I worked with Joe for 10 years and just learned of his illness when I came home for Christmas. Heaven has gained an angel who watched over and cared for many of God's precious gifts here on earth.

The name Joe Dyson has been in my memory since September 1985 when my premature baby was taken to the nic-u at JMH. Joe's skill and caring mannerisms helped to put my mind at ease when I saw him caring for my son. He even named him the 'Big Preemie'. I have a picture of him holding my baby. He was good. God's peace and comfort to his family and friends.
