Robert H. "Dave" Smith, 54, of Glen Allen, formerly of Saltville, died Tuesday, July 28, 2009, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease. He was the son of the late Mattie Shortt Smith and Eugene Melvin Smith. Survivors include his loving wife, Lisa Romanello Smith; his daughter, Jody M. Smith of Saltville; his stepchildren include Adam Dye of Bristol, Melissa Ann Stubbs (Jeremy), D. "Scott" Stubbs II (Nikki), and his "baby-girl," Connie J. Stubbs (David); two sisters, Brenda Holmes and Minnie J. Smith, both of Marion; and his brother, John Teague (Jo Ann), of Powhatan; his nephews, Robert Eastridge of Saltville, John Teague (Paige) of Manakin-Sabot; and a niece, Joy Wise (Charlie); several step-nieces, step-nephews, and great-nieces and nephews; his in-laws and friends, Domenic and Barbara Romanello of Glen Allen; and his pit crew at Tuckahoe Tire. Their love and support made his days special. His family will miss the sound of his shuffling feet as he tried to start his engine. He was a man of few words and whatever he did say always made good sense. A celebration of his life was conducted at 6 p.m. Thursday at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy, Mechanicsville. Another memorial service will be held at the Church of the Nazarene at 1 p.m. Sunday in Saltville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. Online condolences may be made at drhendersonfuneralhome.com D.R. Henderson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Dave would always get me with one of the oldest tricks in the book. He would point at my shirt and say "whats that" and sure as I would look down here came a bonk on the nose. I'll never forget all the times working on race cars together or the best summer ever when I got to go to work with Dave everyday. He would always say "your going to turn in to a pepsi" but he still kept a roll of quarters in his pocket so I could have one whenever I wanted it. I miss getting to watch the NASCAR races with him every Sunday and cussing Jeff Gordon for the debris cautions. We were big fans of #3 and I remember talking to Dave when, Earnhardt died it was like loosing one of the family. Someone said to me right after that "I saw where your hero died at Daytona". I really don't remember who said it and I didn't know how to respond probably just nodded my head or something. But if someone said that to me today I would say no my hero left us on July 28,2009.

Friends of Dave,

Lift a Bud for Dave,
Dave always wanted you to think it was hard to be his friend and even harder to get close to him. Once you were in, however, you could not find a better friend.

LISA,
I HAVE KNOWN DAVE FOR A LONG TIME. HE WAS MY BROTHER-IN-LAW PLUS MY COUSIN. DAVE WAS A QUITE PERSON, BUT WAS A GOOD FRIEND TO MY HUSBAND, JOHNNY. HE AND JOHNNY GO "WAY BACK". AS YOUNG TEENAGERS, THEN AS GROWN ADULTS. SOME OF THEIR BEST TIMES WAS WORKING ON THEIR RACE CAR (SBS RACING) SMITH, BOYD, SCHOOLS RACING. THEY SPENT MANY HOURS WORKING ON THAT CAR TO RACE FOR A BRIEF TIME ON EACH SAT NIGHT AT SALUDA, VA. DAVE WAS THE ENGINE MAN, JOHNNY WAS THE BODY MAN, AND MARK WAS THE DRIVER. THEN THEY GOT INVOLVED WITH GLENN ALLEN (NOT THE COUNTY). THEY HELPED GLENN "BUILD" HIS CAR.
THEN THEY LATER STARTED WORKING AND HELPING ANOTHER CAR OWNER, BRINK AND BOB. A LOT OF BEER AND PEPSI'S WERE DRANK AS THEY SPENT HOURS DOING WHAT THEY LOVED.
I'M SURE ALL WILL MISS DAVE. HE WAS A VERY KIND MAN AND WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR A FRIEND.
WITH LOVE AND SADNESS IN OUR HEARTS,
DIANE AND JOHNNY BOYD, RICHMOND,VA

Dear Dave,
It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to you today. I have been privlaged to know 2 great men in my life my grandfather and Dave. I do not remember a time in my life when Dave was not a part of it. He was a father to my son and our daughter. Jody has thanked me many times for giving her Dave as a father. Dave and I spent 28 years together sharing highs and lows. Dave was a consistant man that loved his family. He was so much like his loving mother he treated people the way he wanted to be treated. He always tried to make everyone happy just like his mother. I ask his mother once how did you come up with the name of Dave from Robert Harry, she said well my sister wanted to name him Harry my daughter wanted to name him Robert I wanted him named Dave. So I named him Robert Harry and called him Dave everybody was happy. With Dave you always felt safe and protected. I remember one day he was working in the yard and his yard looked like a picture at all times and the chem lawn man stopped and said could I ask you a question sir, and Dave said sure. He said I know you don't need my services, but what exactly do you do to that grass to keep it so green? Dave simply said takes alot of sweat and alot of budweiser to keep it this green. Goodbye my dear and faitful friend. I love you, Terry
