Phyllis M. Umberger Phyllis Morehead Umberger, 83, of Wytheville died Saturday, died Saturday, July 11, 2009, at Carrington Place at Wytheville after a brief illness. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 22, at 11 a.m. at the Old St. John's Lutheran Church with Pastor Steve Ridenhour officiating. Interment will be in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. She was born July 3, 1925, in Wytheville, daughter of the late Dr. Robert C. and Julia Owens Morehead. She lived in the Cripple Creek area for over 50 years before moving to Wytheville three years ago. She was a noted area artist and art teacher. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan F. Umberger; a son, Jonathan Guy Umberger; a sister, Julia M. Slater; and a brother, Freddie Morehead. Survivors include a son, James L. Coen Jr. of Wytheville; a brother, Robert C. Morehead; two granddaughters, Brittany Shiver and Tammy Henderson; a sister-in-law, Helen Umberger; special family members, Steve Slater, Tim Osborne and Betty Gwen Kelly; and numerous other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's Cemetery Fund, c/o Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 405 W. Main Street, Wytheville, VA 24382. Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.
