As of Sept. 13, at least 58 people have died or are presumed dead in the wake of Hurricane Irma’s path through the Caribbean and landfall in Florida.
The death toll is expected to rise as authorities continue relief and recovery efforts in areas hit hardest during the storm. As the Sun Sentinel in South Florida reports, there are often more fatalities following a hurricane due to falling debris from damaged buildings and trees.
In Florida, eight people died at a Hollywood nursing home that had lost power (per the Sun Sentinel); six died in car accidents across the state, including two law enforcement officers who struck each other in a head-on collision (per the Miami Herald); a Davie man fell from a ladder while putting up storm shutters (per the Sun Sentinel); two people in Georgia were killed by falling trees (per the Atlanta Journal Constitution); one of South Carolina’s four fatalities was a man who suffered carbon-monoxide poisoning from a back-up generator (per the Post and Courier).
At least 37 people have died throughout the Caribbean, including 10 in Cuba and 11 on the French islands of Saint Martin and Saint Barthelemy (per the Miami Herald).
