I was in Alabama this past weekend and saw a man that looked just like Phillip...so much so, I did a double-take. Today, I saw a picture of Phillip and it brought back SO many memories of the 20+ years that we were in music ministry together. Time has not diminished the memories or the pain that we feel when he crosses our minds. Miss you, Phillip...

Lord have mercy what can I say. I was under Elder Britton's direction for at least 20 yrs or better. I sang with the Mass Choir, & the Palms Ministry for more than 20 + yrs. We laughed, we cried together & he even played a huge part in helping to raise my 2 girls. I miss him so much & I still dream about him often. In fact just night before last. Sometimes I still don't believe he's gone. I'll see you again my brother on that great gettin up morning.

My prayers are with the family and all his friends.
Present with the Lord! This morning watching our brother directing GSS Mass Choir on UTube, I'm questioning why its says "Late Elder..."

Though Elder Britton and I never met, I enjoyed his work with the GSS music ministry. (His music encouaged me over the years during my military travel)! I'm so thankful, God blessed us with Elder Britton and his talents!

I just watched a video of Phil directing "He Cares"... It was perfectly awesome... brought me back to the days of being in Psalms...after singing the wrong note a few times.. i later learned that the choir wasn't for me.. but watching from the sidelines was just as wonderful as being up there under Phil's direction...I will never forget his friendship..My sister Sethany and I(Carla) loved him dearly...

These guest books are for people like me who hear of someone who's touched their life passing months and months after they've passed. I met him up close only once and I wished that I could have pressed through my shyness to get to know him better. Thank you Phillip for allowing God to use you to touch others. Thanks especially for "We Offer Christ" on behalf of all those who came to Christ as a result of that song.

My heart was heavy upon recently hearing of the passing of your loved one, and also my Brother in Jesus Christ. We sung together in the St. James Baptist Church (Allegro Young Adult Choir.) Your entire family is in my prayers. I now know personlly, after the passing of my Mother. That GOD IS ABLE to comfort and keep you. STAY STRONG IN THE LORD is my prayer.

I just happen to be traveling down memory lane and was deeply saddened to learn that Bro. Phillip Britton had passed away. We didn't know each other well but I know him the days of singing in the Allegro Choir at St. James Missionary Baptist Church. Even then, I knew that Phillip had a zeal for serving God. He will be missed by us all but thanks be unto God for precious memories.

May God continue to bless, keep and comfort the family and thank you so much for keeping this book open.

Thanks so much to Mr. & Mrs. Coleman for allowing us to continue to express our thoughts about your wonderful son, my friend, confidant, & Musical Instructor whom I will never ever forget. He taught me so much, & gave me chances that no one else was willing to give me. I was also in the Psalms Ministry under his direction for many years, & he always displayed a spirit of excellence in everything he did for the Lord. He also helped me to raise my 2 girls in Ministry, he was like a second dad to them when they needed correcting, & I had no problem with that. I know he is in Heaven doing a great work for the Lord, & we take comfort in knowing we will see him when we get there. I miss him so much, I have a memory of him on my Myspace page. Thanks for allowing his memory to stay alive.

Thank you Mom and Dad Coleman for allowing us to share our remembrances of Phillip with you. Although it's been a year, it seems like only yesterday that Phil left us. I truly miss singing in Psalms with him; he was truly a director gifted by God. Musically, he could make you do things you didn't think you were capable of. As I think back over the years, personally I have been in the presence of musical greats at GSS; Michael Robinson, Moses Hogan, and Phillip Britton. The music that must be playing in heaven right now! I've retired from singing because I've lost my passion for it, but what I wouldn't give to be directed one more time by one of the greats - Min. Phillip Britton.

January 1, 2010

We were all so devastated when Phillip was laid to rest on Saturday, 27 December, 2008. We lost a real treasure, such a son. It was if a part of my soul was taken away.
“But crushed I am not; nor robbed of elasticity, nor of hope-nor quite of endeavor-still I have some strength to fight the battle of life. I am aware and can acknowledge I have many comforts-many mercies- still I can get on. But I do hope and pray-that never may you or any one I love, be placed as I have in a lonely room and to have opened before the mind’s eye the record of the last year with its shocks, sufferings, losses and its trials.
My grace is sufficient for you,
For my strength is made perfect in weakness.
2 Corinthians 12:9
Now that Phillip is in perfect peace, let us honor his life by continuing to make beautiful music, knowing that we must be willing to make sacrifices daily to bring harmony as we sing to those who will benefit from our song. And, most importantly, heeding the call to follow the lead of the Conductor. Our song must be pleasing to His ears, for He has written the music we sing.

Love You Phil!!!

I just realized that it's been one year now since your passing. I was visiting family in Texas last year when I hear about it. As I think about you as a person, all I can remember how wonderful you were, your love for your family, friends, music, the spirit of excellence, and your abilities as a husband, father, brother, teacher, director, employee, supervisor, friend, and leader. Where are the videos and DVD's to showcase your gifts in directing, singing, preaching and speaking. It's sad to know that we allow so much talent to go away when that person closes their eyes. Hopefully, this will change and we will do a better job in preserving the successes and accomplishments of the past. We need more documentation of the history of gospel music from the years past. Those were historic moments and should be shared with the world. Thanks for creating and being apart of those historic moments. You were a great man, Phillip Emery Jones Britton. My friend forever!!!!!

Well I guess your question has been answered, thanks for helping me raise my 2 daughters Maisha, & Nyoka they turned out to be great daughters, talk to our Father for all of us down here that we can hold on to our faith, because these times we live in are so difficult, but we look forward to seeing you again in eternity. Gabby,

I remember Phil introducing you to us a long time ago. I wanted to write and say, "Amen" to the things you wrote about Phil in your last post in this guest book. I loved and respected him greatly. He was the only other person who could direct, teach and get respect from the choir members as well as Albert Hadley did with the N.O. Gospel Soul Children. I don't know if God broke the mold after them because I have not meet anyone as good as they were yet. May God continue to bless and keep you and your family. Please give Joey a big hug for me. I didn't get a chance to talk to him when I came down last year.

Thanks again for your post.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PHIL

Horatius Coleman, Jr.

February 18, 2009

Children are not born sons and daughters, even though we call them that. They are simply born children. "For unto us a child is born,..." Isa. 9:6.
A birth is an event that begins the process of becoming a son or daughter. Sons and daughters are born over time, not at birth. It is in this sense that I am reminded of what my son, Phil and I acquired over time, as we moved from parent and child to become father and son. "It is that wonderful relationship that I shall always cherish as I daily reflect on a son who called me father".
On this day, 47 years ago, a child was born, but over the years, a son came out of that child. and it is in that special sense, that I wish you my son, an eternal happy birthday Bishop!!!

Love, Father

Happy Birthday to my Big Brother... I love you so much. I had a dream today and I saw you in a tailored white robe walking around heaven with the biggest smile on your face. I miss you so much, but I know that you are still here. I feel you all around me. Jesus I thank you for all your blessings, and although I don't really understand I love you and I yet trust you. Give Phil a hug for me. Phil can't wait until I can see you again.

A Reminiscence

YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.

May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.

Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;

To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

WOW!!! Still trying to get over the fact that's he's not here any more! An extraordinary director and definitely the last of his kind as being one the greatest directors in history! On a personal note, anyone that knew me in my younger days, knows that me and Phil didn't always see eye to eye. But, I've always had great respect for his gift and what he was able to do with even the WORST of choirs. I'm glad that God allowed him to stay here long enough for us to make up and he hired me back @ GSS! For that, I'm forever grateful! It's been a great 23 yrs. of knowing him and I'll see him on the other side. To my mentor, idol, and teacher, Joel Britton, I'm praying for you and the rest of the family during this time of bereavement!!!

Minister Britton will be truly missed in the music arena, his gifts and favor from God was such a blessing to the body of christ. The Psalms ministry will forever be grateful for what you poured into our spirits through your teaching of music and the melody that always came together and for that we will never forget you. May you rest peacefully in the bosom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Elder Britton "Phil" is greatly missed. Those of us who were under his leadership in Young Adult Chorale and Psalms hold very fond memories of him as we rehearsed, traveled and while we would praise and worship the Lord during our services. I truly appreciate the gift that he had and his willingness to nuture the gifts of others. Also, because he knew his choir members so well, if he thought you were going through something, he'd take time to listen and minister. You could call him on the phone and he was there.

He is missed by us all. I pray that Terri, D'Vyne, Joey and Gabby find peace in the memories of Phil and know that he is in a better place.

Wow. It took me a minute to really digest the fact that Phil is gone from this physical realm. I regret that my schedule didn't permit me to be there for the final farewell of his earthly house of this tabernacle.

He was a kind soul. He had a very big heart and was a loving, gentle, thoughtful person.

I remember being so upset when he became ill and fussed about him not answering my call (in front of Jackie). He just used his usual squint-eyed smile and said, "Ok, then."

His talents as a writer and director are so unparalled, that they demand a legacy to continue for him.

He will be forever missed and loved. I pray for D'vyne, Terri, Joey and Gabby. Rest on, my brother -- my friend. Rest!

To Joey & Gabbie and the Britton, Jones and Coleman Families. My heart is heavy after hearing of the Death of my Brother Phillip. Many memoires of our lives while in Detroit at Jones Temple COGIC came straight to my mind. Phil was what I call a Director-Extraordinaire, and I learned so much from him both musically and in Life. The comfort that I have is that he was SAVED/SANCTIFIED and I'll see him once again. But He can't crown Him till I get there! Love You!

It was our pleasure to know Phillip Britton from 1994 until 1997 for the kind hearted person that he was. His smile and laugh had a way of brightening up a room. We knew his character to be soft spoken and smooth. He was a very caring person that we understood him too be. His relationship with God was real and personal. He will be greatly missed in our hearts but we are grateful to God for sharing him with us here on this earth. We must remember that this world is not our home. We have a better place on high. Our prayers go out to Phillip Britton's entire family. Peace in the Name of Jesus. Walk in the peace of God. Amen

One of my fondest memories of Phil is of him telling me to "Praise God from the pews" when I asked him if I could join the choir. Anyone who has heard me sing would say that was absolutely the right answer.

My prayers and love goes to your family. I can't help but cherish the memories and good times we had during our Chorale & Psalms days. My mind reflects back upon the fun filled days we had during rehearsals and singing engagements. Although we act joked, we laughed, and act totally crazy while on our way to sing. God used us wherever we sung. I can also remember in choir rehearsals Minister Britton would sometimes goe through each section one by one too see who was singing the wrong part. Not only did he find choir members sing the wrong part, but in the wrong section. Oh i can go on and on about many memories. It was a pleasure being under his leadership for 20+yrs. We will miss you, but we don't have to weep without hope, because we will see him again.

To the Britton Family.
I am thankful to have known Elder Britton and thankful that he was a part of my life. He was truly annointed of God. He was blessed with a gift that transended the ministry of music. I will always appreciate and cherish the words of encouragement, the personal committment to making the choir at "Greater" be its best for the Kingdom, and more importantly, for connection to my spirit. May God continue to comfort you all and bless you more as you cherish the life he shared with all of you. And may God's annointing and gift continue to flourish in the beautiful flower - D'Vyne. Elder Britton, I love you, I continue to miss you, but I celebrate with your family for now, you are at peace.

I offer my sincere condolences to The Britton Family. As a former choir member (Psalms Ministry) under Min. Britton's leadership, I truly loved and admired him. He was definitely one of God's true talents. He will be missed and thought of often.

Music, when soft voices die

Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory—
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the beloved's bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.

To the Britton Family:
We are so grateful that God allowed our paths to cross in this life. D'Vyn, we pray that you are comforted in knowing that your Dad is in the arms of Jesus - he loved you more than anything; and know that you are in our family prayer. Joey, we pray that you stay strong in the Lord - Phil has left so many large imprints on the hearts and memories of so many different people. Terri, we pray that you continue to look to Jesus to guide and comfort you through these times. Britton Family, we thank you for sharing your son with us and all the others people whose lives he has left a lasting impression. Be blessed and know "to be absent from the body, is to be present with the Lord." We believe Phil is resting from his earthly job and is continuing his praise and worship for Jesus. Elder Britton, we will miss you!

Brown-Britton Family,

There is so much I can say, but I would rather encourage you to trust in God as you experience this chapter of your lives. Only God will get you through this. You can rest in God, because He has brought you to it, to take you through it.

Elder Britton:
I will always remember the 8 years I sat under your leadership in the Psalms Choir(the most awesome choir ever!) at GSS while attending college and med school. I love your energy and your spirit. Phil had a way of pushing us out of our comfort zones. Many of the things you taught us at GSS, I still use today in my current choir. I will always remember your smile and your sense of humor. To the family you are in my prayers and may God will help you through this time of transition. God Bless.

Elder Phillip,
Some we know for a reason, others for a season. I only knew you for the season you taught the ASO Gospel Choir that wonderful song and directed it at Symphony Hall during Gospel Christmas 2007. Your awesome talent was obviously a gift from God. To Elder Phillip's family, hold on to God's unchanging hand. With sincere sympathy.
