Barbara DePoy Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

Mrs. Barbara Hoey DePoy, age 74, of Avondale Estates, Georgia passed away Thursday, April 22, 2004. Mrs. DePoy was the wife of Robert Dale DePoy, to whom she was married for 54 years, and the daughter of the late Grace Weeks Hoey and Harvey Hoey. Mrs. DePoy graduated from West High School in Rockford, Illinois and from Indiana University in 1950 with a B.S. in Science/Health Education. Mrs. DePoy taught school at the Cerebral Palsy School, Headland High School, and later was a "hospital/homebound" teacher through the Fulton County schools. Because of her own experience with childhood polio, Mrs. DePoy was a life long advocate for people with disabilities. Additionally, because her children were all involved in the arts, she was a great supporter of theater and dance in Atlanta. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in College Park, where she sang in the choir for many years. Survivors also include her sons and daughters-in-law, Phillip John DePoy and Lee Nowell, and Scott Eric and Jeannette Block DePoy, all of Atlanta, and one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Claire DePoy and Sanford Arnold Mixon of Athens, Ga., one brother and sister-in-law, Charles Harvey and Jane Hoey, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and one adored granddaughter, Holly Nicole Kimes. Mrs. DePoy asked that her body be given to Emory Medical School. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be given to Easter Seals at 1-800-221-6827 or on their website at www.easterseals.com.
