Laurence Loewy Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

LOEWY, Laurence Laurence Loewy, the daughter of famed industrial designer Raymond Loewy, died Wednesday at her home in Marietta, Georgia. She was 55. Born in New York and raised in NY, Paris and Los Angeles, she attended the Lycee Francais in New York, Foxcroft High School in Virginia and the University of Southern California. Loewy's professional career included work in television production and journalism. During the 80's she was a writer/producer on numerous projects for Alan Landsburg Productions, Group W and Directions International. As a journalist, Loewy worked at the L.A. bureau of the Associated Press, where she was recognized by AP World for her submission chronicling the 1984 Summer Olympics. She was a reporter for Glendale News Press in Southern California and became City Editor for Ingersoll Publications, winning numerous awards for reporting, deadline writing, editing and layout. Retiring in 1990 to raise her son, Jacque, Loewy became the clearing house for Ramyond Loewy's estate. In 1995 she established Loewy Design, LLC to promote the legacy of Raymond Loewy as well as the aesthetics and philosophy he subscribed to. She served on the board of Raymond Loewy Foundation from 2000-05. One of her most significant accomplishments was the establishment of a traveling exhibition entitled "Raymond Loewy: Design for Consumer Culture," which has been featured in museums across the country since 2002. The exhibition draws heavily on Loewy's personal archives, a treasure collection of images and information not previously available to researchers or the public. Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts as part of American Masterpieces, the exhibition will continue to travel throughout the U.S. thru 2009. As CEO of Loewy Design, she was currently involved in a new gallery, plans for a Raymond Loewy Museum of Modern Design in Manhattan and new Loewy documentary entitled "Raymond Loewy Loved Locomotives."Loewy is survived by her husband, David Hagerman and her son Jacque Loewy, and step-daughter, Catherine Hagerman. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 20, 2008 from 7-9 o'clock pm at H.M. Patterson & Son, Canton Hill. A Funeral Mass will follow on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at 11 o'clock am at St. Ann's Catholic Church. Arrangements are with H.M. Patterson & Son, Canton Hill 1157 Old Canton Rd. Although I never met Laurence, I appreciate very much her work and her family.

My dear, dear Laurence:

I can still hear your voice exactly as it sounded the first time I heard it. I was a kid from Anaheim via the midwest. You were 19 going on 30, no 40. You had style, street smarts, wit, charisma...and I would come to learn, great courage. It was the first time I'd heard someone use the phrase "joie de vivre" (with an authentic French accent) in connection with character or philosophy. Smart, funny and charming, you were a cross between Oriana Fallaci, Holly Golightly and Cary Grant. You dazzled everyone around you, always leaving us wanting more. I am so grateful, Laurence, so very grateful to have been one of the lucky few to find myself in your orbit.

May you now know eternal joy and “the peace which passeth all understanding.” Well, done, my friend.

Meanwhile, I promise that I shall tell your adorable boy, Jacque, everything I know about his incredible, one-of-a-kind mother.

Forever in my heart,
Debra

This is with our deepest sympathy to David and Jacque. Having worked as a Studebaker car designer for Laurence's famous father, Raymond Loewy in the mid 50's, my wife Alice and I have since had the pleasure of knowing Laurence. Debonaire and charming, much like her father, the design world shall now miss those profound efforts she has put forth towards carrying on the legend of her father. We shall miss those E-mail tidbits, Cher Laurence.

Ellen would have been heart-broken. A tragedy that two childhood friends should pass in such a small time span. We dearly miss our spouse and mother of our child. 'A shoulder' is always available.

When we met in college, she changed the way I looked at the world. I had never met anyone quite like Laurence — that razor sharp intellect, fierce in her convictions with a devilish sense of humor, patently eccentric but so self-effacing, and absolutely stunning. She drove the men wild, especially our professors. Some would never be the same. No one would. Her quest for knowledge was enviable and her zest for life infectious. Knowing her at a time when you are just finding yourself was certainly my good fortune. She had the courage to be herself, to be an individual. She brought out my competitive spirit and for that I am eternally grateful. I am so thankful that Laurence graced my life. My only regret is that we didn’t stay in touch as the years went by and we moved on in our lives.

In her life, she set the world on fire and her incandescent spirit will continue to wash over all. To her family and loved ones, I send my heartfelt sympathy.

Laurence was one of my most cherished friends. Some people are larger than life --and Laurence was one of them. Always in our hearts, her love and laughter will live on in our memories.

To her beloved David and Jacque, may it help to know that friends are sharing the sorrow in your heart. My heart is reaching out to you in sympathy and prayer.

It is with a truly heavy heart that I share my sympathy for the passing of our dear Laurence. We called each other 'Sister' and could not have loved each other more. As a designer, with her beloved Father Raymond, in his NYC Offices, we were first brought together and the years delivered us unique friendship. I am currently in Seoul Korea, to address the World Women's Forum and will sadly be unable to attend Laurence's funeral on Tuesday, which is also my birthday, a date which will now always remind me of our special love.
