Weston Bate Obituary

BATE Professor Weston Arthur OAM FRHSV
24 September 1924 - 31 October 2017

The President, Councillors, staff and members of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria are very saddened to hear of the death of Professor Weston Bate.

Weston Bate was a life-long champion of community and local history. He inspired generations of students at Brighton and Melbourne Grammar Schools and Melbourne and Deakin Universities. He was Professor of Australian Studies at Deakin from 1978-1989.

He served as a Councillor of the RHSV from 1990 to 2005 and was President from 1991-1997 and 2002-2005. In this position he provided encouragement and support to more than 300 local historical societies under the RHSV umbrella.

He was the author of many books, of which his histories of Brighton and of Ballarat are regarded as exemplars of this genre.

He will be very much missed by all in the Victorian history community.

We extend our deep condolences to his wife Janice and family.
