Herstol, Walter George
a son of Norway and son of Thomas and Ingrid Herstol of Brooklyn, NY passed away peacefully on March 5, 2011 at the age of 91. Raised in a loving family, he was encouraged to appreciate the arts and to play music. As a young man he was fascinated by aviation and continued his education at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. Walter served with distinction in the Navy during WWII as a teacher of optics and later spent almost 40 years as an aeronautical engineer with the original Sperry Gyroscope Co. He is survived by a sister, Thelma Solberg of Miami, FL; a son Walter Robert Herstol; a stepson Walter D. Swan and his daughters-in-law Renee Logan-Swan and Lillian Herstol as well as a niece Joan Goos of San Diego, CA. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 40 years, Katherine Anne and a former wife Evelyn H. He is also predeceased by his other son Thomas George Herstol, a brother Thomas and step-daughter Karen Anne Swan. Walter will always be remembered for his honesty and by his integrity. He was curious about all things mechanical and always responded with good humor. His optimism was only exceeded by his kindness and generosity shown to all. He will be sorely missed by all of his extended family and friends. Memorial services will be held at Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Rd., Scottsdale on Friday, March 11th at 10:00AM with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at the National Memorial Cemetery, Phoenix, AZ. In lieu of flowers, donations in Walter's memory may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.
