Rons Bowlins Obituary

Bowlins, Rons R., LCDR USN, retired
LCDR Rons R. Bowlin, US Navy, retired, passed away March 8, 2011 and joins his wife, Betty, who had died thirty days earlier. All who knew the couple knew they would not be separated for long. Rons was born in Bagnell, Missouri on November 23, 1921, the fourth of the seven children of Paul and Opal Bowlin. He was a naval aviator in WWII, serving as a fighter pilot on the U.S.S. Makin Island. He served as a flight instructor during the Korean War and was then assigned to an all weather night flight squadron. He attended the University of Kansas, Kansas City. In spite of his many accomplishments he seldom spoke of them. During WWII he was awarded an Air Medal for landing his plane on the carrier without radio or flaps. He and Betty had two children, Michael (who preceded them in death) and Diane McVicker, four grandchildren (Tiffany Heiss, Kyle Bowlin, and Michelle and Sean McVicker) and one great grandson, Bryson McVicker. A sister Sarah Henderson, brother Paul Bowlin, daughter-in-law Glenda Bowlin Edwards, son-in-law Tom McVicker and several nieces and nephews also survive him. Rons and Betty retired to Ahwatukee, where they lived an active life playing golf, bridge and entertaining friends and relatives; he made a great martini and was never afraid to tell everyone when it was time for them to go home. He was a good cook and very well known for his barbequed ribs. He had unwavering love for his family, even when he disagreed with their choices and he worked to stay in touch with family members around the country. He never really retired; he got his real estate license and worked for several years. He was always working on something. Internment for Rons will be at the National Memorial Cemetery on March 11 at 9:30, where he will once again join Betty. A memorial service for both Rons and Betty will be held at Mountain View Lutheran Church on March 12 at 9:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice of the Valley or Mountain View Lutheran Church in Ahwatukee.

Dear Diane and family -

Please accept my condolences on the loss of your parents. They were people whom I would have liked to have known personally, and I enjoyed reading about their accomplishments, challenges, and passions. Isn't it amazing that ones' parents have had "lives" before they had children...

Rons and Betty were wealthy in a way many of us can only hope to be, in the companionship of many friends and family who celebrated the good times with them and helped them cope with not-so-good times. Although they are not with us physically, they will be remembered by those who knew them, and most certainly by our Father.

I am very sorry for your loss.
