Roy Quigley Obituary

Quigley, Roy R.
79, of Apache Junction, AZ passed away on March 3, 2011. Roy was born in Tulare, CA, on January 14, 1932 to Lela Maggie (Blackard) and Benjamin Franklin Quigley. As a young man, Roy excelled at athletics in virtually all sports which included a national ranking in tennis and the Le Grand High School scoring record in basketball. After he graduated, Roy joined the Air Force and served at Fairchild Air Force Base as an electronics technician. While in Spokane, Roy met his lifetime love, Doris V. Ellwanger. They wed on December 12, 1952 and started their 58 year marriage together, raising their 3 children, Terri, Bobbi, and Steve. Roy worked in the food wholesale business for 42 years before retiring to pursue an active life of leisure. Roy was an avid and successful hunter, fisherman, and gardener. He was happiest when he was enjoying Priest Lake with Dorie, family, and friends. Virtually every morning, you could find him onboard his boat, the Speed Queen, with a line out to catch "the big one". Afternoons were for picking huckleberries "as big as your thumb", and evenings were reserved for sharing stories with friends around the campfire. At home in Spokane, you would always find him puttering in his garden and yard. Roy was a big WSU Cougar and Zags fan, and rarely missed a Mariners Broadcast. In April 2009, Roy and Dorie moved south to Apache Junction, AZ to be closer to family. He spent many hours this past year sitting in the sun, watching the coyotes, quail, bunnies, and bobcats and holding Dorie's hand. Roy is survived by his wife Doris, his siblings Naomi, Benjamin Franklin, and Maxwell, his children Terri Helmick (Jack Clark), Bobbi (Bill) Herzberg, and Steve (Colleen) Quigley; his grandchildren Chris, Ben and David Gamman, Jamie (Joe) Celeya, Steve and Cara Quigley, and Glenn and Abby Herzberg; and one great-grandchild, Bailey Celeya. He was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers and sisters. A family service will be held Saturday, March 12, at Terri and Jack Clark's home at 7061 E. Pinyon Canyon Village Circle, Gold Canyon, AZ 85118. The family wishes to thank the Hospice of the Valley, Apache Junction Health Care Center and especially David Gamman for the kind care delivered to Roy and Doris during these difficult times.

Although I never met Roy, Terri shared many stories about his life and family. His obituary was beautifully written and gave me even more insight to this caring man. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

We moved across the street from Roy & Dorie in July 1987. They were the first to welcome us. Throughout the years they have shared their smoked fish, huckleberries and many hours of setting out in the yard visiting. Our throughts and prayers are with you Dorie and family.
