Sally Meyerhoff Obituary

Meyerhoff, Sally
Sally Meyerhoff, age 27, died suddenly on March 8, 2011. Sally was a peerless athlete who loved track and cross country running, and achieved a position among America's top marathon runners. At the time of her death she was training for the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials. A life-long Arizonian, Sally graduated from Mountain Pointe High in Tempe 2002 and received her B.A. from Duke University in 2006, where she was an NCAA All-American in cross country and track and the Atlantic Coast Conference cross-country champion in 2004. Returning to Arizona, Sally began a part-time career in teaching and coaching while pursuing her ambitions as marathon runner and triathlon competitor. After turning professional she set an American record in the ten mile, was a national champion in the 25k and recently won a world title at the Hawaii Xterra Half Marathon. When she won the P.F. Chang's Marathon in Phoenix she was the first American to ever do so. Sally loved her life in Arizona and being with family. Her mother Cindi, father Tom, brother Daniel, and sister Samantha were often by her side when she traveled to competitions. At home she was devoted to her two Scottish Terriers (Scotties), and was an avid collector of anything related to them. Family and friends always knew the right present for Sally when they saw it. Sally touched everyone who knew her with her joy in life, her devotion as daughter and sister, and the intense pleasure she took in doing things for family and friends. Sally's tragic passing is a shock to all who knew and loved her. Sally's mother, father, brother, and sister mourn the loss of their dearest one in the prime of life. A memorial service will be held in the near future. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Sally Meyerhoff Foundation.

Dear Meyerhoff Family,
I want to tell you how shocked, saddened, and distraught I was at hearing about Sally's tragic death. My sons are Chas and Marco and they ran for the Men's Blue Devils while Sally was running for the Lady Blue Devils. My husband and I were pleased to meet Sally and watch her run several times. I remember at the Great American Cross Country Meet Sally came up to me and told me how much she liked my "running shoe" charm necklace...that, "It looks light enough to run with and cool too!". I knew then what a great woman she was...lots of confidence, strength, and charm. We enjoyed watching her red pigtails as she floated through her races. Chas and Marco often remarked that she was not only a great runner but a wonderful human being. They were quite fond of her. As a Mom, I can't imagine your loss. I just wanted you to know that Sally touched our lives like she has many others. May her memory live on in all of us. All our condolences and strength go out to you and your family.
Sincerely,
Nancy Reinisch

What an amazing life that has ended too soon. I am running in my first race in April hopefully she will be running with me in spirit. She will definitely be in my thoughts! Maybe one day I can work up to running a marathon in her honor! My deepest sympathy to your family! The world has lost a great woman! God Bless!

To Sally's family and friends - all of Tempe mourns with you. As a female star athlete, she was/is an inspiration to all who knew her growing up. And still to this day, she is Tempe's lanky, redheaded girl, running down on Rural Rd. We will miss her dearly, but we will never forget her.

I had the pleasure of meeting Sally at last year's Ryan House Run and she was such a ray of light! A true inspiration to us athletes. I know I will carry a little of Sally's "WILL" to be the best that I can be, she will be in my thoughts in my races ahead. I'm hoping that all of us who knew her and were touched by her carry a little bit of Sally's perseverance and passion to never give up on your dreams no matter what it is!!! Sally, you will be greatly missed by us all!
