Glasberg, Oscar (Bud)
A leader in the glass industry died on March 16th in Scottsdale, AZ at 87 years old. He lived in New York City, Weston, CT, Nantucket, MA and Scottsdale, AZ. Born in New York in 1923, Bud Glasberg was the son of Bernard and Frances Glasberg. He attended James Madison H.S. In 1943, in the midst of WWII and college, Bud entered the U.S. Army. In 1944, not long after D-Day, Bud was posted overseas and assigned to the 83rd Infantry Division. He participated in the breakout from Normandy and the race across northern France to the German border. During this time he was promoted from corporal to staff sergeant (squad leader) and was later evacuated from combat in the Ardennes Forest (Battle of the Bulge) because of frozen feet. After recuperation, he was assigned to the 36th Infantry Division and commissioned 2nd lieutenant infantry. In February, 1946 Bud separated from the service with an honorable discharge. During his time in service, he was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster, Combat Infantry Badge, European Theater medal with four clusters. After the war, Bud returned to Ohio University (Athens, GA) and graduated in 1947 from the School of Commerce with a B.S. Degree in Journalism with high honors. In 1959, Bud Glasberg joined Ashlee Publishing Co. in New York as publisher and editor of Glass Digest, a leading glass industry magazine. In 1975, he founded the interGLASSmetal International Trade Exposition and played a significant role in developing international relations between the U.S. and worldwide glass manufacturers. Alternating between Düsseldorf, Germany and cities in the U.S., the biennial trade exposition attracted worldwide attendees. Bud retired in 2005 to enjoy his passions of classical music, jazz, traveling the seven continents and patronizing the arts. He is survived by his beloved wife of 21 years Marilyn Glasberg, his daughters Anne Sternheim, NY, Eve Glasberg, NY, stepsons William Rose, IA, Glenn Rose, AZ, step-daughter Jacqueline Rose, AZ, nine grandchildren and sister Cecile Weissberg, NY.
