I knew George when we were both students at Phoenix Union High School! He was one of the most interesting and creative people I knew at the time. I still have some poetry he wrote then, and I remember one day he came to class and showed me a fugue that he had written, using a popular song ("Oh, My Papa") but in a minor key. I managed to talk with him on the telephone several years ago (he still had his good tenor voice), but unfortunately we never could meet again. I shall always miss his brightening presence.
